  1. Shit, I’m sure there’s lots of great stuff but with the Kamandi Omnibus and the new Love & Rockets hitting me at the same time, I have no idea how I’ll be able to pay attention to any of it.

  2. I’m not even sure which DC ‘new 52’ books I’ll pick up this week. But I do know that I’m more excited about finding that out then about getting the two Marvel comics which I’m about to drop…

    The Mighty Thor #6:
That Matt Fraction sure is a talented writer. It takes a special talent to take a premise like “Asgard! vs! Galactus!” and make it as dull and lifeless as this. Under-written, out-of-character characters, and art which has some pretty pictures but often wonky story-telling. This series has been a huge disappointment.

    FF #9:
Another book I really want to like but just don’t. The decompressed storytelling gives me very little on an issue-to-issue basis. An initially intriguing story idea has been stretched so far now that I’m past caring. The writer and artist seem to telegraph ‘significant’ moments but I’m just not seeing it most of the time.

SO, and old Marvel zombie like me is pretty much dropping Marvel (except for Daredevil) in favor of shiny exciting new books from DC!

It’s like living in a parallel universe! Next you’ll be telling me that, in this reality, new Star Wars movies suck but new Battlestar Galactica TV shows are good!

  3. Between Habibi and Love & Rockets, I am going to be a happy camper!

  4. @Chris Brown – I did the EXACT same thing.

@Jeff – that Kamandi Omnibus has me just DROOLING.

  5. ALL STAR WESTERN #1
    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #670 SPI
    AQUAMAN #1
BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT #1 – I lost interest after two issues of the last series. I find it funny that as a selling point, Paul Jenkins is telling interviewers he’s not read the series at all, even though this is meant to be a continuation.
    BLACKHAWKS #1
    BRILLIANT #1
    FLASH #1
FURY OF FIRESTORM THE NUCLEAR MEN #1
    GREEN LANTERN NEW GUARDIANS #1
    I VAMPIRE #1
    JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #1
    SAVAGE HAWKMAN #1
    SUPERMAN #1
    TEEN TITANS #1
    VENOM #7 SPI
    VOODOO #1

KAMANDI OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 LAST BOY ON EARTH – !!!

Chris Brown – Have you checked out Hickman’s current image mini Red Wing? It’s the exact sort of thing you want him to be doing with FF, and it moves along at a cracking pace.

  6. ALL STAR WESTERN #1 – I’ll try this since Bernet is still involved
AQUAMAN #1 – I imagine this will have all of the things I like and dislike about Johns, just like the rest of his books
CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BUCKY #622 – The first issue was promising, and I’m hooked on the mystery mentioned in the solicits
DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS #11 – This has fallen off a bit from the first arc as the art’s gotten less consistent and more fill-iny, but still the campaign you wish you were having
FLASH #1 – Yet another one of the many new DC books I’m buying primarily for the art, something I almost never do
HERC #8 SPI – I’m going to be sad to see this finally go, but this last series has felt a bit off, an ill-fitting last ditch premise change; they had to try to find readers somehow, but I really miss Amadeus Cho and the previous book’s high adventure tone
SECRET AVENGERS #17 – The last issue was as genuinely entertaining as the previous issues by Spencer were terrible; man were they terrible
SUPERMAN #1 – Sorry to say the preview for this book was uninspiring, *very* generic seeming Superman action despite the pretty Perez layouts (he’s having a stronger influence on the art than I expected) but I’ll still give it a shot

FINDER LIBRARY TP VOL 02 – This is the pick of the week for me; when I picked up the first volume in the spring, everything else went on hold for three days until I finished it; just brilliant comics

I’d probably also pick up the Kamandi book if I hadn’t completed my collection of Kirby issues a few years ago. I’ll catch up with Habibi and the L&R eventually.

  7. Looking like I’ll be rolling around on a rooftop and caressing the pointy ears of:

    ALL STAR WESTERN #1
    (Bernet!)
    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #19
(@Cole Moore Odell: Bernet! Yes, more Bernet!)
    DEADPOOLMAX #12
(I hear Marvel charge $3.99 for 19 pages so that books like this can keep going (charitable Marvel!) or sometimes the artist gets tired (kindly Marvel!) or they aren’t selling you pages they are selling you a lifestyle (bibblebabble Marvel!) or look, shut up, and just pay it! And stop going on about Jack Kirby! I don’t know how many pages this Marvel comic will have but they will probably be okay.)
    JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #1
(Peter Milligan – but which Peter Milligan will it be?!?)
    SIXTH GUN #15
    (Trundling along quite nicely, thanks.)
    WARLORD OF MARS #10
(Lust in the dust! Swords in the guts! And more alternate covers than the average Marvel comic has pages! (Legal note: not true.))

    Books / Mags / Stuff
KAMANDI OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 LAST BOY ON EARTH
(‘70s DC Jack Kirby! Don’t even think about asking!!! Buy it!!! It contains a panel in which The King sums up the entire sad confusion of human nature better than any philosopher ever could: “They’re killing themselves over a strawberry shortcake!!!” It looks like a kid’s comic, and it is indeed one of the greatest kid’s comics ever created but there’s an underlying bleakness that’s all too adult and all the more effective for the jarring juxtaposition between delivery and content. In the week that is coming buy KAMANDI! The cute lil cut-up in the cute lil cut-offs will surprise your socks right off! )

LOVE AND ROCKETS NEW STORIES TP VOL 04
    (Sweet.)

Hey now, where’s HOLY TERROR on this list!?! Don’t the denizens of San Francisco (“The world’s favourite city!”) deserve to get all honked off by Frank Miller too? Or is it next week?

Hope Craig Thompson has a nice time and sells lots of COMICS!!!

  8. ALL STAR WESTERN #1 (not to disparage the fine work of Bernet, and the obvious love of fellow Savage Snarker Cole Moore Odell and Official House Critic JohnK (UK), but I’m really looking forward to more MORITAT. Comparisons to Moebius do both a disservice, but ‘wow’. Still, an “Eastern” Western has some selling to do….)

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #19 (Sparkle free!)

ANGEL & FAITH #2 (somehow missed issue one, but this gets a lift from “Buffy Season Nine” issue #1 which might just have hit EXCELLENT)

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS #11 (so true, Cole Moore Odell. So true)

I VAMPIRE #1 (last minute addition. Looked all the wrong parts of gothy and exploitive, but that was a very nice preview.)

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #1 (@JohnK (UK): I would like to hope its the Peter Milligan who wrote Paradax and Johnny Nemo. The same Peter who had a deranged serial killer, skin flakes of JFK and a sentient ghost of an electric chair being the lead elements of his first SHADE arc! Or the same Peter Milligan who made me throw up in my mouth with SKIN. That said, it might be the Peter Milligan from Venom vs Carnage or Elektra)

SUPERMAN #1 (Just the other day I was downtown at noon at lunch, clear blue day. John Williams’ Superman theme came on the ipod, those first slow trumpet blares, and then the rolling drums. And just beacause sometimes I’m still 8 years old, I looked way up, between the buildings. And that’s why I’m buying this book.)

TERMINATOR ROBOCOP KILL HUMAN #3 (Hasta la vista)

WARLORD OF MARS #10 (my oh my, but that Marvel book with the grammatic golem of a title was EXACTLY what I want from a Barsoom tale. Let’s get going Dynamite!)

KAMANDI OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 LAST BOY ON EARTH – !!!

COVER STORY: THE DC COMICS ART OF BRIAN BOLLAND – !!!

and what nuDC will it be for me….

    probably AQUAMAN assuming I don’t see any dismemberment, moms in peril or continuity porn;

    FLASH #1 which will be beautiful but the solicits already make the story sound like a confused high-concept blancmange;

    FURY OF FIRESTORM THE NUCLEAR MEN #1 because B-listers need love too;

and SAVAGE HAWKMAN #1 because I want to like you, I really do. We will see.

@Chris Brown: you PERFECTLY explained why there aren’t any Marvels on ye olde shopping list. FF, Thor even Aaron and the sublime Renato Guedes on Wolverine can’t bring me in. (“ZOMG! those are my kids! noooooooo!). And if anyone is still reading Fear Itself, let me know how it turns out, M’kay? I’m not worthy.

  9. @Corey (Ottawa): You have shamed me, sir. I can only say that ’twas the blinding glare of Bernet that caused me to neglect the magic of Moritat in such an unwarranted, nay, inexcusable way. Boy howdy, that ALL STAR WESTERN book’s sure gonna be real purty.

Hey, you’ve read SKIN? Me, too! Big Milligan fan here, despite having read his (and Deodata’s) ELEKTRA as WWF crossed with Neighbours series. Nothing can kill a love that can survive such a thing.

Um,not to be a negative nelly but I don’t fancy your chances with SAVAGE HAWKMAN, not with that team. Do let us know though, we’re all ears!

Psssst! @Cole Moore Odell: Don’t forget – Bernet’s in AMERICAN VAMPIRE. Good pie all round!

  10. @Ben Lipman… by weird coincidence I actually have checked out Hickman’s Red Wing and it IS really good! I’m kind of bummed it’s a mini and not an ongoing.

How is it that Marvel has descended to a point where they take good talent and make them worse? It used to be the other way around: Marvel would take talented but rough-around-the-edges newcomers and subject them to storytelling, editorial, and schedule discipline, thus making them better! What the hell is going on over there?

  11. ABE SAPIEN DEVIL DOES NOT JEST #1
    VOODOO #1
    WARLORD OF MARS #10
    X-MEN LEGACY #256

  12. @Chris Brown: what is this “ed-it-or-eeee-uhl” of which you speak. The days when Marvel Editors were all their great Writers Emiritus (Lee, Thomas, Conway, Wein, hell Shooter) is long past.

I have three and a half words as regards discipline: “Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk.”

I believe some comic periodical shoppe proprietor hereabouts actually secured a legal verdict as to their lack of discipline.

Few of the current editors are even experienced creators. Near as I can tell, they play post-box and copy-editor. That former too much, and that latter too rarely.

Or “to rarely” as Marvels editors would have you you beleive (sic)

A 23 year old editor aint no editor. Especially when he makes a tenth (twentieth!) of what the talent makes. Just saying.

  13. @Cole: Thanks for pointing out that FINDER vol. 2. I’m pretty sure I already have all the material but it’s so damn brilliant and I’m so glad to have it all in one (more) easy-to-loan volume!
