Arriving 9/5/2012

Well, or at least that’s the plan — some stores might possibly not receive their books in time to have them out right at opening on Wednesday AM, you might want to call first just to be 100% sure (though, major metropolitan centers should be just fine)

  1. All of these #0 issues from DC are giving me flashbacks to Marvel’s -1 issues back in the 90s, the period when I first started buying comics. It was not a great time to start, since the issues were largely impenetrable. Will DC have anything that tops the excitement of an Askani storyline that didn’t go anywhere? Or a graveyard play put on by Stan Lee to inform the Hulk about Bruce Banner’s secret past? WILL IT?

…Well, hopefully, yes. It’s not a particularly high bar.

  2. DC also did a month of 0 issues immediately following Zero Hour. they were present-day stories that for one reason or another saw fit to present an origin. The only one I remember, Superboy, did a solid job of recapping and setting up the (slightly) new status quo: X-Ray vision!

  3. In all the back to school rush, I sort of never got around to reading my last take, so no capsule reviews this week. But looking to Wed, it seems a bit of a ‘hit or miss’ week for me. Sad to say that I am honsetly most excited about two trades of books I have already bought:

ACTION COMICS #0 – supposedly this will bridge the past Action stories to the present day. I think I cared about that more when I ordered it.

BEFORE WATCHMEN SILK SPECTRE #3 – last issue was pretty good. While I mentioned it here on another thread, I guess I wasn’t expecting quite so much toplessness and sex in my Watchmen (Night Owl #2 especially..REALLY JMS?).

BLACK KISS II #2 – That said, THIS is where I expect all kinds of freaky-deaky. JohnK’s copy is being sent in a plain brown wrapper labled “Subaru Repair manual” to bust that embargo.

    DIAL H #0 – has been a pleasant surprise

EARTH 2 #0 – has been an unpleasant surprise…it started great and really showed innovation with the idea, but seems a bit ‘off’ right now. I honestly can’t quite put my finger on it, but my enjoyment of this book has slipped tremendously.

    GI COMBAT #0 – Dinosaurs!

HAWKEYE #2 – despite the awesome love being heaped on this book, I thought the first issue was simply GOOD.

MIND THE GAP #4 – moving along nicely.

PETER CANNON THUNDERBOLT #1 – the fact that Jae Lee is doing covers really rubs in that is is just more unseemly business with the every colder corpse of Watchemen, innit?

PHANTOM STRANGER #0 – I loved the old Silver Age P/S series, but I know I won’t be getting that here. I suspect this one issue (as a nostalgia buy) will be it for me. I really am totally disinterested in Pandora and the meta-narative of the nu52.

PLANET O/T APES CATACLYSM #1 – Earth gets blowed up real good. Hopefully will somehow tie in to the bomb loving mutants of Beneath POTA. Glad to hear Jeff loved the Betrayal/POTA book so much. It really *was* good.

PUNISHER #15 – I have enjoyed the last four issues of this tremendously.

THE LONE RANGER #9 – I am ready for the Tonto arc to be over with, actually. It has been broody and slow, while adding very little to the character.

THIEF OF THIEVES #8 – twist pulled off, and so I guess this is where we find out ‘what’s next’. I have to admit I’m sceptical whether the core idea has enough there to sustain itself, or whether it’s just a mini-series that doesn’t know it yet. If I was a TV Exec, I might be really interested in that answer, although I might have asked that before shelling out the dosh.

THINK TANK #2 – high concept book of the anti Tony Stark.

Some great TPs of some great Image books this week too:

GLORY TP VOL 01 THE ONCE & FUTURE DESTROYER – great art sells an excellent story. Probably my second favorite book for all of 2012 (behind Saga).

MANHATTAN PROJECTS TP VOL 01 SCIENCE BAD – just wows me every time. Ideas litterally bursting off the page. Stellar work from Hickman.

COMICS! Giving lawyers something to argue about since 1938!

  4. scratch that, I guess. No HVC for me!

  5. LAST WEEK!

BPRD HELL ON EARTH RETURN O/T MASTER #1 (OF 5)
This looks and feels ace. Sook cover. Crook art reminds me, oddly enough, of Paul Smith (maybe it’s the Golden Ageesque ritual scene towards the end). Crook does let his weird out in a few harrowing scenes here, generally very unsettling and in a good way. Also getting ready to switch to full numbering in two months. 100 issues of BPRD and I jumped in on, I think 90? Didn’t miss a beat.

    PROPHET #28
I liked it in my usual “Smitty likes Prophet” way but this one felt a little arbitrary. Why exactly is Diehard split into all these pieces? They made some handwaving gestures towards the idea that it was a trail of cosmic breadcrumbs but in such a gigantic backdrop what are the odds, you know? The art was a little less for me in this. When Graham himself does lumpy, or misshapen it feels like there’s a deliberate design element to it. When Milonogiannis does up Diehard and Old Prophet in action I can’t stop looking at their thighs.

Echoing Jeff, the backmatter in this issue is really something else. I don’t know shit about the nuts and bolts of comic making and this reminded me of that essential truth.

    SPACEMAN #9 (OF 9)
I am going to re-read this until I get it to make sense. Could be a while.

    X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #4
Really enjoyed Aric opening up the armor here. Quibble, the preview of the NEXT issue in back kinda torpedoes the whole set-up in THIS issue. D’oh. Slick looking close-up of Shadowman on the back cover.

MY DESCENT INTO THE OPIUM DEN THAT IS THE BACK ISSUE BASEMENT

So I was hunting up individual issues of Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade and instead got a lot of comics that started with S.

STAR TREK #12 – Penultimate chapter of the Mirror Universe storyline. Origin of the saucer section breaking off from the drive section. Yes, I am a bit of a Star Trek fan. I had this book as a kid so the resolution here is particularly sweet. What a great cover. http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Double_Image?file=Double_image.jpg

Skull The Slayer #7 – Holy shit, I am in love. Working off 6-9 panel layouts Sal Buscema and Bill Mantlo really hit my sweet spot. This passes my “Random Issue” test with little more than a text blurb at the lead page. That this only lasted 8 issues is traumatizing.

Space: 1999 #3 (Charlton UK) John Byrne’s first issue of 3 on the series and he has the cockiest f’ing credit box I’ve ever seen. Everyone else in the issue is lettered normally and Byrne gives himself the sig box equivalent of a splash page. Keep in mind this is 1976 Charlton John Byrne (aka “I just started my career” JB). That said, the art is pretty great and feels big and clean. Definitely less cluttered than the norm for the era. Martin Landau does look very constipated for most of the issue, however. Hilarious.

SHADE THE CHANGING MAN #7 Oh Steve Ditko visually, conceptually, you are a genius. The cover to this is stupidly beautiful. Who knew the M-Vest was originally designed to allow a mining company to exploit “unknown zones” Damn capitalists! Also, The Cloak design is stunning. So great. The story? Let’s focus on how awesome it looks.

Solar Man Of The Atom #2 – Shooter went mad meta with this right from the get go. I dunno, I may look for more and may not. The Alpha / Omega shot seemed much clearer whereas this feels like it starts chasing it’s tail almost immediately. Two different time variants and a multiple personality thrown in to boot.

SPELLBINDERS #4 (1987) Reprint of NEMESIS THE WARLOCK, SLAINE, AND AMADEUS WOLF. My British comics debutante is showing but I never knew Nemesis looked like that. (JLI Guffaw). Hints at the start of ABC Warriors and some other stuff. The printing is god awful for a company calling itself Quality Comics. In associated Haha there’s a little editorial at the front by Dez Skinn about the pitfalls of work for hire vs. creator owned comics. Boy, bet that’ll never crop up to bite anyone in the ass again. (sadface)

    THIS WEEK!

    ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #2
Van Lente is on the latest War Rocket and seems like he’s really enjoying this. Clayton Henry is one of my favorite artists working today. Clean, expressive.

BLACK KISS II #2 (OF 6)
Fine, I’ll get the tentacle porn. If you guys express interest I’ll risk federal prosecution to ship some Subaru catalogs.

    BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #3
For Kieron Gillen’s next podcast I want him to talk to Warren Simons.

    DIAL H #0
    EARTH 2 #0
    WORLDS FINEST #0
    ACTION COMICS #0
These are the #0 books I’m getting tentatively. If they’re just bullshit “get me up to speed” issues they won’t be coming home. None are on my pull so I don’t feel obligated.

PRINCE OF CATS TP recc’d by Brandon Graham. Generally speaking, that’s good enough.

  6. ACTION COMICS #0 – Jumped off this title 6 months ago, but this looks like it’s about the young, scrappy Superman I wanted to read about

ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #2 – The 1st issue was fun enough for me. The new Valiant relaunch seems pretty well conceived.

FAIREST #7 – Done-in-one 1940’s film noir pastiche with Beauty and the Beast? Sure, I’ll bite

GREEN LANTERN #0 – Because the Annual came out last week, I forgot to remove this from my pull list. If this doesn’t wow me I’m done

FASHION BEAST #1 – Next I can see some Avator editor rummaging through Alan Moore’s rubbish bin and publishing his grocery list, with Juan Jose Ryp illustrations (page 1 – Bread, page 2 – Eggs, Page 3 – Eye of Newt…)

PETER CANNON THUNDERBOLT #1 – This week’s value for money winner

PHANTOM STRANGER #0 – I’m a sucker for Phantom Stranger, even though I really don’t think I’ll like this. It better not be a definitive origin story

SWAMP THING #0 – I’ve enjoyed this series, but I don’t know if I can make it through Rotworld
