Arriving Halloween, 2012

Brian Hibbs

One of the smaller New Comics Days of the year, for a holiday 5th week. This is the time to come clear out your pull box if you haven’t been in for a while, or to buy that GN you were on the fence about, if you’ve already cleared out your sub — your local comic shop’s cash flow is going to be smaller this week.

Though, on the East Coast, I would clearly call ahead to make sure that comics are on sale when they’re supposed to be — the storm might knock shipping schedules way off kilter. (and could, conceivably, impact everyone next week)

I’m pretty excited for the new Fantagraphics EC books, and that “bookplate” edition of Charles Burns’ THE HIVE is a signed copy for the same retail as unsigned.

What looks good to YOU?

  1. As usual, when you announce a light week it’s a heavy week for me. As always, I kinda wish that Halloween themed comics were released BEFORE the actual day, when we’re more in the mood for’em. But I woulda picked up GHOSTS, DARK SHADOWS, etc. regardless. Also happy to see HAPPY, the JLD Annual, the CBLDF special, the Kubert Presents, and others on the list,

  2. It’s all about Faust this week. FAUST!!!! I’m glad you’re receiving a copy. You should give them out for free to all your customers so they can spread the gospel of FAUST!!!!!

Okay, maybe not. It’s still impressive that it’s finally coming out.

  3. “ABSOLUTE FINAL CRISIS HC (RES)”

    If only…

(And funny that the absolute final is a resolicit.)

  4. LAST WEEK: Brandon Graham week was a lot of fun – Multiple Warheads lived up to expectations, and Prophet was Prophet. Debris, Shadow and Incredible Hulk all had good last issues. Superman #13 showed some, if not a heap of promise, but as that promise is being followed by a six part crossover, it may be too little too late for me. Batman Incorporated managed to get me excited about Mozza’s Batman run for a little while, so it was a success.

    THIS WEEK:

AQUAMAN #13 – The pacing would be my biggest problem with this book – Johns is writing wide-screen action for Reis, but I feel a little more depth packed into each issue would help the book along, if only because it would get Reis to vary up his panel shapes a little!

FATALE #9 – Odds are, it will be good.

HAPPY #2 (OF 4) – I’m probably more excited for this issue than for the first – it’s all set-up now, so we get to see where Mozza goes, to Millar-parody or beyond!

HAUNT #27 – Anytime I mention loving Nathan Fox’s art, that issue is a fill-in, so I won’t mention it. I do feel however that Casey could go a little crazier on this title – Lady Haunt is a good start, but I want more!

JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #1 (OF 6) – Well, I had been looking forward to just enjoying Kubert’s work on this one, but I guess it’s going to read as more of a celebration of his life/work now.

NEW DEADWARDIANS #8 (OF 8) – This has been very enjoyable.

SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES #6 – Best. Superman. Comic. Currently.

WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #19 – AVX is over! This title will be able to get back to being 100% awesome, as opposed to 80%. (I hadn’t been buying this, but my love of Jason Aaron’s Hulk run made me hungry for more, so I caught up on all this issues since I dropped it at #11. Needless to say, the issues that weren’t as heavily tied to AVX were much better.)

  5. Certainly are a lot of Annuals coming out this week. Odd.

  6. LAST WEEK!

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #4
Chris Burnham has really turned into an artist I enjoy. Stylistically a good fit for this story and count me in as feeling the emotional pull of Damian’s situation here. His moments at the end felt earned and “right.” Excited for a look back / ahead at the Damian Batman of 666.

    INVINCIBLE #96
Reversals and reversals. Invincible delivers again.

MULTIPLE WARHEADS ALPHABET TO INFINITY #1 (OF 4)
Wow, no ads. Such fluid illustration. Really thrilling to see this treatment.

    PROPHET #30
I get why this book sells under 10k but I’m stunned it continues to slide. This thing SHOULD be picking up readers – not shedding them. Discuss?

    SHADOW #6
Wow, Ennis might have the highest batting average for “satisfying denouement” in comics. I could hear the Shadow’s laugh as the mines went off and that…is no small thing.

    SHAOLIN COWBOY ADVENTURE MAGAZINE TP
Yes, this is / was Geof Darrow but looked so unappealing to me that it barely got a flick through. Not enough to pull me in. Smaller format, random poses of the cowboy in semi-action. No disrespect intended but it seemed a completist kinda thing.

    THIS WEEK!

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #100 RETURN O/T MASTER #3 (OF 5)
BPRD adopts trad. numbering and I am strangely nervous. What I really enjoyed about this was the pick it up / put it down / miss a mini possibilities. I hope it doesn’t change the structure or signal an abandonment of the storytelling principles.

    HAPPY #2 (OF 4)
Oy, this thing. I’m not a fan of Robertson’s and – conceptually – this has the potential to be one of Morrison’s thinnest high concepts. It feels to me like it came out of the Joe The Barbarian “sessions.” A cutting room floor idea that is getting pressed into service. At 4 issues it might be worth seeing if he brings any flourishes to it but I could also see myself giving this a look and just leaving it on the rack.

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #3 (OF 4)
Feels like a bit of extra time passed between 2 and 3 but maybe that’s just me. I’ve expounded at length on the derivative nature of the Rocketeer as a concept but this is one of my few chances to see the Samnee / Waid team in action so I can’t pass on it.

Yeah, very slight week all told but that’s ok. I’ve still got the latter half of Sean Howe’s book to go and the first two collections of Krazy and Ignatz from Fantagraphics just arrived. Seriously, if you’re looking for affordable used book options online I’ve had very good luck with abebooks. 2001 Treasury Edition – 5 bucks! Fanta books under $8.

Also, I know where to read most if not all Graham’s porn work online – Warheads .1 and Perverts at least. I can post direct links (as he himself has done on his twitter) but I hesitate to do so here on SC just for propriety’s sake. Let me know, gang.

  7. Second light week in a row for me.

BATGIRL ANNUAL #1–It’s on my pull-list, so I suppose I’ll be getting this. Not sure if it’s written by Gail Simone or not, or if it ties into the ongoing story or not.

HAPPY #2 (OF 4)–J_Smitty was right, this was kind of thin in concept, but reasonably entertaining. Morrison has enough credibility that I’m in for all four issues.

SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1–See note for Batgirl Annual #1.

I’ll at least flip through the following:
    ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #1
AVENGING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1–Team-up with the Thing.
    GHOSTS #1

  8. Feel free to link, if you want, J_Smitty.

I think PROPHET is slipping in sales because Giannis is a “not everyone’s cup of tea” artist.

  9. CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2012 #5 – I can support my LCS and the CBLDF? Hooray for acronyms!

GHOSTS #1 – This looks to have a better lineup than usual for these Vertigo vintage title anthologies. Plus, it’s Halloween!

JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #1 (OF 6) – The final work from the inker of Before Watchmen (at least that’s how I imagine DC’s press release on this reads). RIP, Joe.

NEW DEADWARDIANS #8 (OF 8) – I’ll miss you, New Deadwardians

SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 – I could have sworn there already was a Swampy annual, but maybe I’m confusing it with the 0 issue or the Animal Man annual or something, but again, Halloween!

  10. Brian,

Given that Milonogiannis is not Lipton or Tetley do you think it was a mistake for Image to bump Prophet’s “episode order” from 6 issues to a full year when it seems that in order to fill that number of issues Graham and Co. had to break plan and get a wider range of artists (styles?)

It’s been very enjoyable for me but you’ve always (to my eyes) been on the side of giving people a tighter, more focused package. You think it would have been an easier sell at 6 issues and a tighter art team?

Also, here’s that link for anyone interested. Usual extremely NSFW warnings apply. This site is kinda like that scene in movies where they tell you to walk down the hall and look straight ahead no matter what you hear or see out of the corner of your eye.

I’ve tried to post the NSFW link in numerous ways but the semi-sentient comments section continues to eat my posts. Now, if this winds up as 6 posts in a row by me I totally apologize.

  12. Yeah, it didn’t like that link — I had to manually rescue it, THEN manually approve it.

Probably not a place anyone should go… :)

  13. @J_smitty: Hey, thanks for that. What’ve we got he–Oh my! Oh! Stop it, please, for God’s sake, please stop it. There’s no more time! Please stop it. Stop it now. Turn it off! Stop it! STOP IT!

  14. Now, Now, JohnK (UK) Methinks thou doth protest too much…

I warned you! Look neither left nor right! Up or down for that matter. OR…even…well…at the original Graham material unless that’s why you went.

Anyway, it’s out there if you were / are …interested.

Thanks for your herculean efforts, Brian.

  15. Joining in late as we were getting the wee ones ready for All Hallows. So I’ll skip the week that was (and it was really pretty darn good) and head to the WEEK THAT IS:

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32 – may be going on haitus at the right time, actually. I like this, but don’t want to see it start heading in circles.

BEDLAM #1 – the Image machine keeps on marching.

GHOSTS #1 – I used to always like GHOSTS, and this has some fine talent behind it.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK ANNUAL #1 – had been on the fence about this, but last issue and a quick flip convinced me to stick with JLD.

LOT 13 #1 – also some fine talent.

NEW DEADWARDIANS #8 – this has been a kick. Hope we get another arc in the future.

PHANTOM LADY #3 – I had thought Funerella was the star of the late, lamented final Freedom Fighter arc. Nice that P&G have brought her back.

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #3 – Nothing new and original here! (Dinosaurs! Skull Isalnd! Rocket Packs! Nazis!) but Waid and Samnee make it pop.

    WINTER SOLDIER #12 -
