Arriving WED 10/13/2010

Unlike regular Monday holidays, UPS is running today, which means the new comics are on WEDNESDAY, like usual. This is one of the very rare exceptions to the Monday Holiday/Thursday Release pattern (soon to completely vanish after the first of the year, hurrah!)

Big week, too.

  1. My oh my. A monster week. All while books head back to $2.99. I agree, however, that I think the habbit has been broken for too many. MAybe even for me. We’ll see.

Anyhow, these look good to me (and are what I’ve pre-ordered from my LCS)

BRUCE WAYNE THE ROAD HOME BATGIRL #1 – really, DC. FOUR of these books this week?! Do you hate your customers? And your retailers?

CONSTANTINE HELLBLAZER CITY OF DEMONS #1 (OF 5) – Not sure why we’re having a ‘Blazer mini unless it’s to use up inventory stories before things close up forev…. Oh. I hope not. I really do.

HOUSE OF MYSTERY HALLOWEEN ANNUAL #2 – How sad that I love the Annuals but find the ongoing boring.

INVADERS NOW #2 – Stop. You had me at “Arnim Zola” Sad, but true. I’m a slave to Krazy Kirby Bad-Guys.

JONAH HEX #60 – I worry about what chance straight ahead story-telling, good art, and done-in-ones have in this market. Ponder this: decompression = sucker.

NORTHLANDERS #33 – A great arc. Nothing like this on the stands right now.

PHOENIX WITHOUT ASHES #3 – I’m truly saddened to read how sick Harlan is. The man holds a grudge like nobody’s business, but he is, really, TRULY a treasure. And a mensch.

THANOS IMPERATIVE #5 – not sure why this arc reminds me of the Avengers-Defenders War, but it does (tone?). Anyhow, that’s a GOOD thing.

THOR MIGHTY AVENGER #5 – good fun storytelling. Remember fun? And plot? Remember plot?

TOMB OF TERROR #1 – Sucker for the horror books. Intellectually I know this is a trade-mark renewing cash-grab.

UNWRITTEN #18 – on probabtion. Sorry.

Point of Sale impulse buy candidates: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #645, IRON MAN TITANIUM #1 (almost a pre-order but these one-shots have outright LIED in their solicits, so I want to see how much is actually a new story….), STRANGE TALES 2 #1.

And these two books are in a special category:

STAR TREK KHAN RULING IN HELL #1
    WARLORD OF MARS #1

Dear Dynamite: Quit doing 4 variants per month. You lose my pre-order as I will pick the ONE good cover per month off the rack. It helps my local, but not enough. This is why I walked away from pre-ordering Red Sonja. And Green Hornet. And….

Just to say: Dropping pre-orders is one step from dropping the book.

  2. Wow, lots of stuff– though most of these I’m waiting for the trade on. Still, very excited by Knight & Squire, and glad to see a new issue of Bruce Wayne: Time Fucker, finally.

Other items of note: Casanova, both Thors, that Hellblazer mini (Sean Murphy, man), Iron Man, Unwritten…

  3. Yay! KNIGHT & SQUIRE #1 (OF 6)!!!!

    For the rest,
    IRREDEEMABLE #18
JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #11 (BRIGHTEST DAY)
    NEW AVENGERS #5
    THOR #616
    X-MEN #4

I may read more, but only if I have time.

    @Bill Bill Bill Bill Reed
I would absolutely buy the hell out of any series named Bruce Wayne: Time Fucker! But as it is, the Return of Bruce Wayne is more a series of vignettes than a story, and as such I have very little interest in it. My major problem with it is that it simultaneously portrays time as being linear and non-linear both. That is to say, if Bruce Wayne was already there, well then nothing has changed. And if he was already there, what’s the point in trying to STOP him from BEING there? It’s ridiculous, and my suspension of disbelief goes right out the window.
AND then what’s the point of presenting new events in each issue and making it seem pertinent that he’s PROGRESSING from one to the other? Better to portray him as a pre-established character or bystander to important events in history, DC or otherwise, to show how they might change him as a person. But of course, Grant Morrison doesn’t DO stories like THAT any more.

  4. BATMAN RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #5 (OF 6) – I’d buy two if it had ‘Time Fucker in the title.
DC COMICS PRESENTS BATMAN CATWOMAN #1
DC COMICS PRESENTS BRIGHTEST DAY #1 – Loving this format. Should it say ‘100 Page Spectacular’ if it’s on 96pages?
JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #11 (BRIGHTEST DAY)
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA 80 PAGE GIANT 2010 #1 – this depends on how the art is when I do a flick through.
KNIGHT & SQUIRE #1 (OF 6) – This is going to rock.

  5. “really, DC. FOUR of these books this week?! Do you hate your customers? And your retailers?”

More likely they’re getting crammed together because of delays on the miniseries, and they’re intent to stick to November for the launch of the new ongoing titles and direction.

Would you prefer is everything were delayed instead?

  6. COMICS!

BATMAN RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #5
(Has someone already done the joke about how appropriate it is that this is late? Added value – DC style! I guess we’re lucky they didn’t go with Bill Reed’s superior title.)
    CASANOVA #4
CONSTANTINE HELLBLAZER CITY OF DEMONS #1
    DOC SAVAGE #7
    JONAH HEX #60
    KNIGHT & SQUIRE #1
    NORTHLANDERS #33
(More historically accurate than GI Viking! This is a Very Good book. Where is the Internet-Love? )
    STRANGE TALES 2 #1
(Like Sid from Toy Story dropped into Marvel’s toybox. At least that’s what I’m hoping for.)
    THOR #616
    (This is hearty fare but…)
    THOR MIGHTY AVENGER #5
(…this is the one to beat. Raise your flagons high! ‘Tis of this title the legends shall sing! Um. Verily?)

    COMICS! Looking fine to ME!

Acespot: Not arguing, just saying: Linear or non-linear I don’t know but I reckon it is pertinent that Bruce is progressing from one event to the other because this progression is illustrating how all (some of?) the dominoes that are cascading down in Batman And Robin achieved their terrible configuration. Also, while Bruce makes smoky love to the timestream with the aim of having it carry his own Bat-self to term in the Present the fact that once he arrives he will doom the multiverse entire is also in my mind. Even if he wins – the multiverse loses!

Yes, you are correct, Bruce cannot change anything and therein lies his doom. This is Darkseid’s Plan. For Darkseid is a tricky rascal. (But at the last Bruce will change things. Because there’s always a way, kids!)

It’s how the inevitable is prevented that’s the ultimate pay-off ; the destination rather than the journey. But because he is a nice lad Morrison spices up the journey by larking about with different genres which is a sweet and tasty treat in and of itself. For me it’s better than having Bruce do stuff like turn up and suggest Paul Revere might consider using lanterns to send messages. That’s more JMS’ style.

Comic Price Rollback: Like many I have reservations about whether it is too late the hero but it was certainly DC’s best PR move for ages. Made it look like Marvel did the sin and DC did the penance. And Marvel’s response? That’s some weak sauce they cooked up right there.

I have never seen anything like this. I cannot imagine what horrors they spied in their sales figures and projections to prompt such a reversal of the natural balance of things. What was it? What did they see out there? Mama, I’m a-scairt! Won’t somebody hold me…

  7. If KNIGHT & SQUIRE is $3.99 (and it probably is) I will skip. But I’ll check after posting this. I normally wouldn’t care but I enjoyed the preview.

STRANGE TALES 2 (I loved the first series so why not, price be damned. I never would have discovered Matt Kindt otherwise).

  8. Brandon, Knight & Squire is $2.99 and highly entertaining!

  9. The list of talent associated with Strange Tales 2 is amazing. I’m forgoing my usual trade waiting and picking it up based on the strength of the creators. I hope it does well and Marvel keeps putting these collections out.

  10. Ralph: Yeah I got it and thought it was great! A done-in-one was a happy surprise.
