Wait, What? Ep. 80: Bats and Birds

Jeff Lester

Apologies to those of you already pestered with this image on Twitter:  I thought it was worth a re-use, in no small part because I must once again plead mentis mortis (I have no doubt I’m handling this dead language so poorly, a charge of necrophilia could well be leveled), thanks to how late it is that I’m composing this and where I’m at for a variety of reasons that will probably become clear once you hear Wait, What? 81 next week.  (Hint: it’s a terrifying topic Graeme and I have tackled before.) But enough of that for now, there’s a podcast to be had!  Wait, What? Ep. 80, in fact, a done-in-one of approximately two hours and twenty-five minutes…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 74: Who Before Watches the Before Watchmen?

Jeff Lester

I hope you have your calendar cleared until 2014, because that’s how long it’s going to take before Graeme and I get to answering all your questions from this thread. Honestly, how were we to know Before Watchmen was going to launched the day before we were scheduled to talk?  As the astute listener may note, we were pretty reluctant to launch into the topic and how clearly tried to get it out of our system beforehand…but like one of those county fair snacks gone bad, it keeps finding new and horrible ways to re-surge and expel itself. So join us, won’t you, for Wait, What? Ep. 74?  The first eighty minutes is Graeme and I talking Watchmen, Before Watchmen,…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 69: First In Twelve

Jeff Lester

It’s 2012 and it’s time for Wait, What? Ep. 69, the podcast that’s not nearly as good at replying in its comment threads as it probably should be! Graeme and I decided to do this all in one since the majority of the response we got were either indifferent to the process or preferred the longer podcasts that allow our tendencies to ramble to eventually get to some kind of point. Do you disagree? Prefer two one+ hour ‘casts to one two+ hour one? Want them even shorter? Wouldn’t mind them even longer? Let us know your thoughts either in the comments thread here or over at waitwhatpodcast AT gmail.com. And while you’re doing so, check out Episode 69, in…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 65.1: I Think We’re All Bozos in this Podcast

Jeff Lester

Yup, and so we are back with Wait, What? which some of you might remember from the days of antiquity as a thing like unto a radio play, enacted by Mr. Graeme McMillan and myself for the amusement of listeners. Episode 65 was supposed to be a piercing search by the two of us for the more-than-two-of-you for the secrets to the considerable success of one Steve Gerber and his run on a Marvel series from the ’70s popularly known as The Defenders. I would like to say we were successful but, um, well, you will hear for yourselves. We do discuss it, mind you, but alas we also discuss Carrier IQ for the first batch of minutes, a big…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 64.1: Can Stop, Will Stop.

Jeff Lester

Oh, Thanksgiving weekend! What a boon you are to some, and a curse to others. I know I am extra-happy with the time off from work, but it also means Graeme and I won’t be recording this week. And it also means there didn’t seem to be much point to breaking this episode in half since so many will be away from their computers on Thursday and instead dealing with the complex mash of family, friends and strangers. (I’ll spare you details about my upcoming Thanksgiving but I realize I’m being way more morose about it than everybody else.) The point is, we are giving you a big ol’ 110 minute Waitstravaganza, with Graeme and I talking Community and Parks…  Read More…

First off, curse Graeme McMillan for showing me up, and lapping me like that! Scottish Bastich! Batman, GLC, LSH, Nightwing below

Graeme Takes On The New 52. All At Once.

Graeme McMillan

You know, before DC Comics so politely sent me the entire run of the New 52 launch issues, I don’t think that I’d ever read an entire month’s worth of a superhero universe before. I have to say, it’s kind of exhausting. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to try and run down very quick capsule reviews of all 52 right here, right now, as Fatboy Slim once said many many years ago oh God I am so old.

Wait, What? Ep. 58.1: The Minor Fall, The Major Lift

Jeff Lester

[Stellar fixed image courtesy of Ron Salas] Uh, yes.  I am running sorrowfully late again, so I’ll have to kinda dash through all this verbal hubbub and let you know the who’s who and the what’s what: Basically? It’s Wait, What? Ep. 58.1.  It’s a little less than an hour.  In it, Graeme and I not only discuss new DC 52 titles like Blue Beetle, Catwoman, Red Hood & The Outlaws (which I called “Red Hood & The Outsiders” which makes more sense but it a mistake), Batman, and Wonder Woman (and more), but also Chester Brown’s Paying for It and initial “sweet jeebis, is it pretty!” pre-review impressions of Craig Thompson’s habibi. Oh, and there are lots of shrieks…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 52.1: Dream Team Supreme

Jeff Lester

The time has come again for us to answer questions from listeners who follow Graeme and myself on Twitter. It’s always a struggle for Graeme and I to stay on topic long enough to answer everyone’s questions, and the struggle here hits near-epic proportions. For example, I won’t tell you the question, but here’s one of my answers: Jim Starlin, Shade the Changing Man Bill Mantlo and Michael Golden, Green Lantern Steve Gerber with whoever he wants (though it should be Curt Swan), Superman Don McGregor and P. Craig Russell, Wonder Woman Len Wein/Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, The Demon Michael Fleisher and John Buscema, Claw the Unconquered Steve Englehart and Gil Kane, The Flash Howard Chaykin, Jonny Double Chris…  Read More…

Honestly, I have no idea for a title — Hibbs on 7/3

Brian Hibbs

BOYS #57: I really have nothing to say about this issue (other than “I’ve become generally bored with this title, and the only thing that keeps me reading is Hughie and Annie’s relationship”), but how…. bizarrely  ironic, maybe, that this cover came out the same week as ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4? Still, an EH comic. FLASHPOINT #4: Again, not a ton to say — this is competently executed, but it really isn’t buttering my bread, if you know what I mean? –  but on the meta-level, there’s something, again, ironic about the notion that the universe is about to have its reality rewritten by the only true Saint of the Silver Age, who effectively has a form of Alzheimers?  Also? I…  Read More…

“More Water, Ma’am?”…Comics? They still make ‘em and I still read ‘em!

John Kane

Enter my personal four colour nightmare! Gonna make your eyes boil like eggs! Or bore you senseless. Hard to tell really. Anyway, I read some comics wrote some words – it’s a story as old as Love itself! Like my face. (You look lost, stranger – The Shipping List is the next post down)

Bewilderment Inc: Featuring The Malingerer!

John Kane

After the break I’ll be not knowing what the Hell I’m doing with some comics you probably didn’t read. Remember, kids, if you want me to stop before someone gets hurt contact Mr. Hibbs.

Hibbs is doing stuff, honestly (some 3/23 included)

Brian Hibbs

Where have I been this week? Well, most importantly, I’m waiting for my new computer to arrive — my home machine mostly-died nearly 3 weeks ago, after about a 10-year run, and I can run anything past basic surfing on it, which means that all writing has to be done at work, sheesh — it was scheduled to arrive today, but FedEx ground has, seemingly, lost it….  at least until Monday. *grumble* Then we have the latest podcast with Comic Book Geek Speak — I very much enjoy talking with those guys, and this is my third go ’round, I think? — which you can find here. Plus, there’s a new TILTING AT WINDMILLS where I reflect a little on…  Read More…

Assessing the Bat-line as 2010 ends

Brian Hibbs

(I really wanted to title this with a “NaNaNaNaNaNaNaNa”, but thought it was too soon after Graeme’s Flash joke last post)

Wait, What? Ep. 17.3: It Ain’t Over Until It’s The All-Over….

Jeff Lester

Yeah, I just had to use this image, which I shamelessly ganked from David Uzumeri’s awesome annotations over at Comics Alliance to accompany our final installment of episode 17, an hour-long rope-a-dope where Graeme and myself thrash out our thoughts about The Return of Bruce Wayne #6 and Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #17.  I don’t think I have yet to successfully post one of these bastards the first time out for all of last week, but at some point or other, this ep. made it on to Itunes or will make it on to Itunes and you can also listen to it here…or perhaps you already have listened to it here.  (Hey, it’s almost like Omega Trap style…  Read More…

Favorites: The Dark Knight Strikes Again

Sean T. Collins

Years ago I came across an eye-opening quote from Jaron Lanier in the liner notes of the reissued Gary Numan album The Pleasure Principle. Google reveals that it was pulled from this Wired essay. Here’s what it said: “Style used to be, in part, a record of the technological limitations of the media of each period. The sound of The Beatles was the sound of what you could do if you pushed a ’60s-era recording studio absolutely as far as it could go. Artists long for limitations; excessive freedom casts us into a vacuum. We are vulnerable to becoming jittery and aimless, like children with nothing to do. That is why narrow simulations of ‘vintage’ music synthesizers are hotter right…  Read More…

Batman, where art thou?

Brian Hibbs

BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL #1: I had somewhere between low and no expectations for this. Ultimately, it would seem to be a placeholder of a comic: it seems unlikely, given what we know, that the “battle” will end up with any other than Brucie-boy back in control. Like many DC comics, this feels needlessly brutal — people getting eaten and blown apart and Underage Jailbait Unattached Feet and all of that; and, like many DC comics, this feels oddly unattached from continuity — the Birds of Prey are disbanded in their own comic, and together here; this wouldn’t appear to be post-FINAL CRISIS (though I guess it could be), and so on. It also repeats several Been There, Done…  Read More…

Graeme’s 10 Thoughts About Showcase Presents: Brave And Bold Volume 3

Graeme McMillan

1. The title – SHOWCASE PRESENTS: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD BATMAN TEAM-UPS VOLUME 3 – feels as if DC was trying to win some kind of award for longwindedness; would it have killed them to just call it SHOWCASE PRESENTS: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD VOLUME 3 instead? I know, they’re probably trying to plan ahead for when they do Showcases of the non-Haney/Aparo issues, but still. 2. If, like me, you’ve been following the series eagerly up until this point, Bob Haney’s weird and poetic way with words has not only become normal by now, but also comforting in a way. “The Brave and Bold Beat continues! Miss it never!” Miss it never? It’s like Bizarro Stan Lee,…  Read More…

Want to see BATMAN BEGINS for free?

Brian Hibbs

We duly handled our first batch of tickets for Tuesday’s showing as the promotions compnay asked us to… but today we got in multiple envelopes of tickets for a showing on MONDAY JUNE 13th at 7:30 PM (at the Metreon), and we have no instructions on these. Therefore, I exercise executive privilege, and will give first crack to those of you reading this website. Here’s what you have to do: come into the store while *I* am working (Friday 2-7, Saturday 2-4 or thereabouts) and ask *me* for one. DO NOT ask Rob or Jeff about them, that will get you automagically disqualified. Now I will probably ask you a question or two to prove you actually READ this blog,…  Read More…

Hibbs’ earlyreview of BATMAN BEGINS

Brian Hibbs

Just got back from a preview screening of BATMAN BEGINS. (and how cool is this? I went with my Dad.) Let’s get some initial thoughts down while everything is fairly fresh in me head. I’m going to try to be as spoiler-free as I can, because, y’know, the thing don’t come out for 10 days or whatever, but this is a review, and I might let something slip. You have been warned. It’s a very good movie, but it’s not like the second coming of superhero films, or anything like that. Several reviewers are way overselling it, man. It’s got a brilliant first act, it has a very solid second act — the third act though, eh, didn’t work too…  Read More…
