Reviews of 8/3 stuff

Brian Hibbs

It has been a crazy week – lots of it revolving around Ben (We need some more recent pics up, don’t we? One more thing to add to the “To Do” list!) His language skills seem to have doubled this week – not only is he starting to assay 3 syllable words, he’s also starting stringing words together to form simple sentences – “Bye bye, momma!” or “Airplane fly!”. He even busted out with a string of “Ub bub wa so-hi!”, which of course, is “Up above the world so high” from Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. So, something is clearly cooking in his head, which is probably why he’s suddenly decided he doesn’t need naps any longer. 2 days this…  Read More…

Comics Shipping 7/7

Brian Hibbs

You, of course, remembered that a Monday holiday means a Thursday shipment, right? We fielded… oh, easily 20 calls today “are comics in?”, though I always assume that half of those are from people for whom we’re their “secondary” store, and they’re just making sure thier primary didn’t, y’know, fuck up or anything. I had a nice weekend in Monterey, thanks. The hotel room, and Ben, Mr. 20 month….er, he turned 21 on the fourth and I just realized that none of us noticed!… well, let’s just say it made a tight fit. I was planning on taking Ben with me to the DC RRP meeting in November, but my experience in Monterey convinced me that was a lousy idea….  Read More…

Ennis meets Ben

Brian Hibbs

As promised: a picture of Garth Ennis holding Ben Hibbs hostage for pints of Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. My understanding is the ransom was delivered promptly and Ben was returned without incident.

Tilting is up

Brian Hibbs

http://www.newsarama.com/Tilting2_0/Tiltingv217.htm Reviews…soon, I swear! Ben took *forever* to put down for his nap today, and I lost most of my forward productivity between that and the Newsrama talkback. More soon! -B

Sweet 16 reviews of 3/30 comics

Brian Hibbs

First off, today marks 16 years of Comix Experience. Hooray! My baby is ready for her prom! Joy! It almost was a disaster though, as at some point on Wednesday night a car pulled a hit and run on another car parked in front of the store, pushing it up on the sidewalk, and wrapping it around the parking meter in front. If the meter hadn’t been there, the hit car would probably have gone through the store’s front window. If the car is still there today, I’ll try to take some pictures and get them posted. What was funny is that all day yesterday people were stopping and taking pix of the car with their friends standing next to…  Read More…

Reviews for 2/23, OMG!

Brian Hibbs

The grandparents took Ben this morning, so, woot! Looks like I can good a good morning start on this, and maybe Jeff won’t have to “hold off” this week after all. Within an hour of posting my last post, Ben ran through almost all of the letters he has left in his alphabet. Oh, sure, he still mixes up his E and his F, but when you correct him, he corrects himself just fine after that. W is “Ag-gah”, but it’s consistant, and he says it with such verve that we can let his baby palate slide there. I still haven’t read 100% of this week’s books (92% and holding, Captain!), but let’s take the opportunity while we have it…  Read More…

Reviews from 3/2

Brian Hibbs

Well, I’m sorta upset at myself for promising to do a full boat of reviews this week — it was a pretty damn “Meh” week for comics, and without something to be excited about, this is about as appealing as a root canal. Still, I said I’d do it, so do it I shall. Hey, have I told you about Ben lately? Just had his 17 month birthday (I think I’ll be talking about months until he hits 2 years old, then we’ll see), and he’s just BLOWING ME AWAY qith how sharp he is. He’s mastered about 1/3 of the alphabet so far — we’ll walk down the street and he’ll point to a sign and declare “Ess!” or…  Read More…

Oh, WonderCon, my WonderCon

Brian Hibbs

Well, I had a terrific time at WonderCon this weekend. WC has been a weird show for a while — the last few years in Oakland had what looked like declining attendence, and tumbleweeds in the aisle, and the sale of the show to the San Diego ComiCon brought the show to San Francisco 3 years ago. The first two years at the Moscone can be charitbly descibed as marginal, where the show was dwarfed by the space around it, but 2005 was the year that broke big. Friday’s attendence looked solid (for a Friday), but the place was reasonably quiet. This was actually great because it gave me a good chance to get some business done, talk to people…  Read More…

Some reviews from 2/2

Brian Hibbs

Whaaaaat?!?!?! Brian’s doing it first? Before Jeff even sees it? What the hell planet am I on? Well, Tzipora’s off to the suburbs for chores, and Ben crashed super-early today for his nap — he usually makes it all the way through TELETUBBIES, which ends at 11:30, but today he watched all of the 10am SESAME STREET in my lap, stroking his hair (Episode 4070, jeez I think I’ve watched that one 25 times this year! I’ve seen it more than any other episode, and it’s the WORST at the beginning. That’s the one where Snuffleupagus’ magic ukelale is broken, so he’s stuck invisible, and Big Bird is all sad [Does anyone remember the days when everyone on Sesame Street…  Read More…

Shipping 2/2 and some 1/26 wrap up

Brian Hibbs

Yah, yah, I know. It’s already Wednesday, and I’m just getting to this, I suck. We’re going to take Ben to the Zoo today (Free Day at the Zoo, hoorah!), so there’s really no time, and besides I’m days late now. Best thing I read last week? A book from two weeks ago: HELLBLAZER: ALL HIS ENGINES HC. Best JC story I’ve read in quite a while. Since’s Garth’s run, maybe. Terrific stuff, and don’t let the price get to you — thought it was really worth it! Of last week’s actual comics? I thought PLANETARY #22 was great — I don’t even really matter that the through-line plot is getting like a page an issue. I also really liked…  Read More…

Bumblefuck!

Brian Hibbs

Sickness reigns in the Hibbs/Friedman household. Benny got it on Tuesday, Tzipora on Wednesday, and on Thursday night I came down with the stomach flu, with nasty things flying out of my orifices at very high velocities. I’m strong enough to type a bit today, but the reviews will be delayed for a little bit until all of my muscles start working properly again… If you haven;t already seen it, or followed alink from Grim or Tom, the new TILTING AT WINDMILLS is up on Newsarama — http://www.newsarama.com/pages/Tilting/Tilting11.htm -B

Comics from 10/27

Brian Hibbs

Been a busy week around here — The Geoff Johns signing on Saturday (Thanks for coming, Geoff — you are a gracious and garralous man, and everyone who showed had a wonderful time), then Ben’s first Halloween on Sunday (well, OK, his second — but he was barely a lump for #1), and the order form is due tomorrow, but I have to get it done today because tomorrow we have to process the new comics… So, I still haven’t read a lot of last week’s comics yet! But I’ve read some, and there’s a few things I definitely want to say, so let’s get to what I do have…. Actually, first up, not a comic, but this week’s ENTERPRISE….  Read More…

Fuckity Fuck

Brian Hibbs

Ben decided it would be fun to make a grab for the power cables in my office, so the power to my Alienware flickered on and off a bunch of time before I was able to get hold of his little hands… and, apparently, something blew out on my system. Long story short, I’ve got to send it back to Florida for repairs, and that’s the system with all of my work/games/WORK, so I’m, basically, fucked on a gimped old computer for the next three weeks or so. The upshot of THAT is, you won’t be seeing any updates on this blog after this one from me for at least 3 weeks. Jeff may or may not update. See you…  Read More…

Cute Cute Cute Baby

Brian Hibbs

I think he’s bloody adorable, and here’s some fresh pictures of Benjamin! (sorry for the relative radio silence the last few days — it’s order form week) -B

Awesome!

Brian Hibbs

So, Ben showed me his first real signs of higher intelligence yesterday. We got him some blocks a month or so ago, and he did a lot of the “raking claw” and mostly just knocked them around the room. Which is cool, and all — he’s still a baby. But for the last week or so, everytime I’ve played with him I’ve tried patiently to show him how to stack the blocks. Didn’t really work, he mostly showed interest in knocking down the stack, flinging the blocks all over the room. This might have been because he was so excited he couldn’t control his fine movements, but I was starting to despair that he wasn’t figuring it out. Anyway, I’m…  Read More…

Not Daily

Brian Hibbs

As we can see, I’m not doing well at the daily updates. I’ll try harder. Two nights ago, Ben kept waking up every 2 hours or so, moaning and whining. I say “woke up” except that his eyes never opened, and I don’t think he was conscious at any point. So I was kinda a wreck yesterday. Plus I promised Tzipora that I’d finally clean my room, which mostly entails taking 9 months worth of comics and properly filling them on my bookshelves. This is a five hour job, sheesh. Anyway, that’s why no update yesterday. Let’s start off sorting through the comics for the week of 8/4 (Which, incidentally, was Ben’s 10 month birthday, hooray!) BIRDS OF PREY #71:…  Read More…

Sharp, pointy teeth

Brian Hibbs

Ben has 4 teeth. They are sharp. Very very sharp. Ben likes biting on things… especially flesh. We call him Nosferatu, sometimes. Ben also likes french kissing. He’ll launch himself at you with his open mouth, trying to stick his tongue in your mouth, or failing that, biting your lips off. Babies are vicious, vicious things. BEWARE! Let’s see if I can clean out the ol in box, and give a clean palate for next week. ROSETTA V2: Anthologies, as noted absurdly many times, are tricky things. Most are uneven (at best), but you can fault them little for trying, at least. I was more than halfway through this one before I found a piece I liked, but then it…  Read More…

Strong!

Brian Hibbs

Something they don’t tell you about babies — the little beasts are STRONG. Ben can easily haul 150% of his weight, and I’m scared he’ll figure out what a fulcrum is.  The real problem, though, is that they have NO IDEA they are strong — they use their full strength all of the time because, well, why wouldn’t you? Me and Tzipora have little welts all over our bodies when Ben has given us a hard pinch while trying to climb somewhere. While I’m going to try to review “everything” for the next few weeks, once I’ve cycled through a whole month, I’ll probably drop back to “items of significance”. Are you liking this format, by the way? Should I…  Read More…

Ben’s asleep now!

Brian Hibbs

The best part of him climbing up on the shelf is that he doesn’t have the foggiest notion of how to get himself down, so he’ll start crying about that, and I haul him to mother earth, and what does he do? Yeah, try to get back there right away. He understands there IS gravity, but he doesn’t quite get how it works yet…. Still, I got him down for his afternoon nap, so back at my in-box…. KINETIC #5: There were a couple of books that really REALLY made me wish I had a column during the hiatus — issue #4 of Kinetic was one of those. Crazy baby

Brian Hibbs

I’m watching Ben today while Tzipora is off shopping — the kid is a little dynamo, trying to get into little nooks and crannies where he shouldn’t be. There’s only so much baby proofing you can do, and there’s always some place he shouldn’t be. His latest thing is to rip apart the CD collection… which is on a shelf under the TV, abotu 4 feet off the ground. Yet the little terror manages to crawl up there with no real problem. Quickly, a few more books while I’ve distracted him with some shiny keys! WALKING DEAD #9: Like I said, I need to cleanse my palate every few shitty comics. Glad I picked this one. Gripping, human story by…  Read More…
