Hibbs says “Heeellllo 3/14′s comics!”

Brian Hibbs

Two weeks in a row, yeah, baybee.

Wait, What? Ep. 76: Dares, Wins

Jeff Lester

And Lo, There Shall Come…An Answering! For most of you, anyway.  I fully confess Graeme and I did punt on a few questions that were either complex enough to take up a full podcast at a later date, or so good that it would require better men than us to answer it.  (Ah, yes: the old “It’s not  you, Listener Question, it’s us” strategy–never leave home without it.) Anyway, as you might imagine with so many exceptional inquiries, it would take us a while to answer them–and of course us being us, we’re going to go egregiously off-topic, right?–so, yeah.  Two hours and forty minutes is what we’ve got for you. We talk so long Graeme turns into The Lord…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 75: Joshua Judges OMAC

Jeff Lester

[Above:  Not a deliberate shout-out, I'm sure, but we'll take what we can get, of course.] Thanks for your patience during our mild vacation! In return, we offer you Wait, What? Ep. 75, which features more than two and twenty minutes of Graeme McMillan and me “stealing the air” or “pump[ing] up the volume” or whatever it is you “kids” call it. [Thanks to Joolian for pointing out that should really read "two hours and twenty minutes," damn my eyes!] Do we talk Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and The Walking Dead? Do we, ever! Dare we discuss Gary Friedrich, Ghost Rider and Marvel? Dare, we do! Tire I of answering rhetorical questions? Frankly, yes, but I won’t let that get…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 73: Thicker Than Forget

Jeff Lester

We didn’t even come close. Don’t get me wrong–we certainly tried.  But give Graeme and I more than four dozen questions with an amorphous time deadline and you’re not going to get the bulk of those questions answered even with us putting in two and a half hours to get it done.  [Though we do so at the expense of Haruki Murakami's 1Q84: if you are currently reading that book, please skip over the 20-25 minute section of the podcast to avoid some ship-sinking spoilers.  (Sorry again, Luke.)] So consider this Part 1 of our answers to your questions, with Part 2 to come next week.  If we go to Part 3, I give you permission to begin hunting us…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 68.1: Grist for the Mill(ar)

Jeff Lester

This one had the best of intentions but somehow ended up being more of the accident-at-the-mousetrap-factory variety. Graeme and I started with the idea of doing a year in review podcast and it morphed, as our conversations usually do, into a verbal catalogue of compulsion and fixation. Oh sure, we start covering events from 2011 like DC’s New 52, day and date digital, but ends up being more about the paintings of Sharon Moody (erroneously called Shannon Moody by me for the whole damn podcast!), Christmas with the Swamp Thing and a long analysis of the year’s crossover events through the only lens that matters–that of Mark Millar. But my system crashes partway through the conversation (which you’ll be lucky…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 66: Winter Oner-Land

Jeff Lester

The image above ties into the podcast in only the most tangential of ways (we discuss Frank Springer for the merest of moments) but I had to include this image, in no small part because I’ve been enjoying Graeme’s Comics Advent Calendar over at Blog@ Newsarama so much. (And because…the Hatemonger for the Holidays?  May be even more topical now than when it was published…) So, anyhoo.  We had one of those podcasts where we only spoke for around ninety minutes and there wasn’t much of a place to cut it very neatly.  (I wasn’t crazy about doing an hour ten for part one, and thirty minutes for part two.) So this is a “oner” episode for you, with Mr….  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 64.1: Can Stop, Will Stop.

Jeff Lester

Oh, Thanksgiving weekend! What a boon you are to some, and a curse to others. I know I am extra-happy with the time off from work, but it also means Graeme and I won’t be recording this week. And it also means there didn’t seem to be much point to breaking this episode in half since so many will be away from their computers on Thursday and instead dealing with the complex mash of family, friends and strangers. (I’ll spare you details about my upcoming Thanksgiving but I realize I’m being way more morose about it than everybody else.) The point is, we are giving you a big ol’ 110 minute Waitstravaganza, with Graeme and I talking Community and Parks…  Read More…

Wait, What? 57.1: Ones Divided by Two

Jeff Lester

Howdy, everyone. My apologies in advance for such a rushed entry, but I’m actually taking a break from editing 57.2 and my concentration is a little bit on the “shot” side of things. Although I’m very happy San Francisco has decided to grace us with some lovely, lovely weather, my apartment is too hot in a “why doesn’t my brain work?” kind of way. (Now I know how the rest of the U.S. felt this summer…) Anyhoo, Wait, What? 57.1! It’s very nearly an hour, and Graeme McMillan and I discussing not only the Miles Morales-based Ultimate Spider-Man #1 and the subime Daredevil #3, but also New 52 books like Deathstroke #1 ( with some spoilers), Red Lantern #1, Frankenstein,…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 52.2: Jerks, Fighters, and Jus’ Folks

Jeff Lester

I admit it. I love “Our Valued Customers” even though it caters to the worst stereotypes about comic store customers. (Although I had my share of crazy people stories when I worked the counter at CE, none of them ever seemed quite as bad as what apparently walks into Mr. Tim’s store on a weekly basis — and honestly, most of the crazy people we had were “it’s San Francisco and there are mentally ill people on the streets” crazy as opposed to “I must talk to you about Spider-Man so hard spittle is always flying off my lips” crazy.) In any event, none of this is especially relevant to the conclusion to Episode 52 of our podcast, although it…  Read More…

Honestly, I have no idea for a title — Hibbs on 7/3

Brian Hibbs

BOYS #57: I really have nothing to say about this issue (other than “I’ve become generally bored with this title, and the only thing that keeps me reading is Hughie and Annie’s relationship”), but how…. bizarrely  ironic, maybe, that this cover came out the same week as ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4? Still, an EH comic. FLASHPOINT #4: Again, not a ton to say — this is competently executed, but it really isn’t buttering my bread, if you know what I mean? –  but on the meta-level, there’s something, again, ironic about the notion that the universe is about to have its reality rewritten by the only true Saint of the Silver Age, who effectively has a form of Alzheimers?  Also? I…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 47.1: Treat Them Mean to Keep Them Keen

Jeff Lester

Honestly, our goal is to hit a sweet spot — somewhere between filling you up to the tippy-top and leaving that last little bit unfulfilled such that you want more.  And given our druthers with the podcast, Graeme and I usually err on the side of “too much.”  Like….maybe way too much? However, this last time, we ended up talking for a little over two hours and that seemed, you know, maybe a bit excessive to listen to all at one go.  So, here is Wait, What? Ep. 47.1, with nearly an hour and fifteen minutes of of-the-moment discussion ranging from Steve Englehart’s The Strangers and the Ultraverse line of comics to more gossip about the DCnU and Warren Ellis’…  Read More…

Burble Burble Burble, Hibbs fufills a promise to review

Brian Hibbs

I said I was going to review, so here’s a few quick hits. I’ve been spending a lot of time this week on the back end of the site, you’ll notice some of the real estate has changed. That “uncategorized” number will shrink over the year as I go through the older, blogger-era posts (sheesh, we have nearly 2000 posts here at this point!), but the tag cloud will really only be utilized properly going forward from here.   If you have any mechanical/aesthetic suggestions for the site, now is the time to do so.   Putting that aside, what stuck with me in the last two weeks?   PUNISHERMAX #14: I wrote up #13, but #14 compels me to…  Read More…

The Bendis Batman / Daredevil thing

Brian Hibbs

Only because BMB asked that retailers pester Levitz over this thing, here’s one retailer’s 2 cents. Putting aside the whole “DC sucks! It’s just like the old days with Stan! Except I talk about penises!” trip that Quesada and Jemas were on (and, see, actions have consequences — does no one remember the adage of being nice on your way up because you get to meet all of those people again on your way back down?), I don’t think there’s a lot of value in DC getting in bed with Marvel as long as Marvel’s current publishing policies are as they are. Remember AVENGERS/ JLA? Marvel printed #1 and 3. Limited to initial orders only. Sold out upon release. Took…  Read More…

Strong!

Brian Hibbs

Something they don’t tell you about babies — the little beasts are STRONG. Ben can easily haul 150% of his weight, and I’m scared he’ll figure out what a fulcrum is.  The real problem, though, is that they have NO IDEA they are strong — they use their full strength all of the time because, well, why wouldn’t you? Me and Tzipora have little welts all over our bodies when Ben has given us a hard pinch while trying to climb somewhere. While I’m going to try to review “everything” for the next few weeks, once I’ve cycled through a whole month, I’ll probably drop back to “items of significance”. Are you liking this format, by the way? Should I…  Read More…
