This one had the best of intentions but somehow ended up being more of the accident-at-the-mousetrap-factory variety. Graeme and I started with the idea of doing a year in review podcast and it morphed, as our conversations usually do, into a verbal catalogue of compulsion and fixation. Oh sure, we start covering events from 2011 like DC’s New 52, day and date digital, but ends up being more about the paintings of Sharon Moody (erroneously called Shannon Moody by me for the whole damn podcast!), Christmas with the Swamp Thing and a long analysis of the year’s crossover events through the only lens that matters–that of Mark Millar. I admit it. I love “Our Valued Customers” even though it caters to the worst stereotypes about comic store customers. BOYS #57: I really have nothing to say about this issue (other than “I’ve become generally bored with this title, and the only thing that keeps me reading is Hughie and Annie’s relationship”), but how…. bizarrely ironic, maybe, that this cover came out the same week as ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4? Still, an EH comic. FLASHPOINT #4: Again, not a ton to say — this is competently executed, but it really isn’t buttering my bread, if you know what I mean? – but on the meta-level, there’s something, again, ironic about the notion that the universe is about to have its reality rewritten by the only true Saint of the Silver Age, who effectively has a form of Alzheimers? I said I was going to review, so here’s a few quick hits. I’ve been spending a lot of time this week on the back end of the site, you’ll notice some of the real estate has changed. Only because BMB asked that retailers pester Levitz over this thing, here’s one retailer’s 2 cents. Putting aside the whole “DC sucks! It’s just like the old days with Stan! Except I talk about penises!” trip that Quesada and Jemas were on (and, see, actions have consequences — does no one remember the adage of being nice on your way up because you get to meet all of those people again on your way back down?), I don’t think there’s a lot of value in DC getting in bed with Marvel as long as Marvel’s current publishing policies are as they are. Something they don’t tell you about babies — the little beasts are STRONG. Ben can easily haul 150% of his weight, and I’m scared he’ll figure out what a fulcrum is. The real problem, though, is that they have NO IDEA they are strong — they use their full strength all of the time because, well, why wouldn’t you? Me and Tzipora have little welts all over our bodies when Ben has given us a hard pinch while trying to climb somewhere.
