We are reaching the end of the month so the weeks are getting larger, which of course just means more of the comics we wait around for every month. We are very excited for STRAY BULLETS KILLERS #2 after the absolute pleasure it was to see David Lapham’s signature creation not only return, but return with one of the best comics he had ever done. Also this week is the hit MS. MARVEL and the collection of the first five issues of the sensational SEX CRIMINALS. Those are a few picks for the week, and with comments working again we are excited to hear what you have to say, so check out what is below the cut and sound off!

This week is not large, but is chock full of funny book goodness. It has a new issue of EAST OF WEST, along with the second collection, SHUTTER from Joe Keatinge and Leila Del Duca and LUMBERJANES from Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson and Brooke Allen. There are, of course, more books below the cut if you would like to check them out!

The Comments are Fixed?

And I for one thank our alien overlords. Next task: getting rid of the spam!   (THANKS JOEY!)   -B

25 years young!

Brian Hibbs

April 1, 1989, I first opened the doors of Comix Experience.  I guess it’s now going to be a thing, finally? I made $117.42 on that first day. My deepest and most profound thanks to all of our customers over these decades. Clearly, I could not have done it without you. Let’s see if I can do 25 more! (Man, I wish comments were working here, *sigh*) -B

If you thought last week was big and things were going to be easy this week, you thought wrong! This week brings SANDMAN: OVERTURE #2, and if that is not indication enough of how this week is going to go than it will be an excellent one! In the wake of Gaiman and Williams are SILVER SURFER #1, DEADLY CLASS #3, ALEX + ADA #5 and IRON PATRIOT #1! But there is so much more beneath the cut, so click there now!

Tilting #231 is up: What do you do with 50k back issues?

Brian Hibbs

You can, as always, find it on Comic Book Resources. I wish I knew why our comments weren’t working right here….   -B

This is a week on the larger side. It brings with it notable favorites, such as, ZERO, SEX CRIMINALS, the return of Waid and Samnee’s DAREDEVIL, the debut of Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore’s ALL NEW GHOST RIDER and the oft sought SAGA VOL. 3! Get on those, but if those aren’t to your liking than click the link and find the books you want waiting there!

This week is a lesson. This week is telling us that we should not judge a week by the amount of books, but the quality of the books. Case in point, this week marks the long awaited return of David Lapham’s STRAY BULLETS with, not one but, two periodicals and a giant book, that itself could be used as a weapon in a story that would appear in it’s very pages! Don’t be fooled though! Plenty other books are coming out this week, just click the link and see for yourself!

I know, the site is a little borked, I know!

Comments be broken, there’s spam, and so on… I’m trying to get it addressed, but I’m just drowning from overwork with the second store.  Some things should be happening VERY SOON that should make things a little better, and there are a few other changes coming that (I don’t think?) are really my announcements to make, so I won’t…. But, really, I’m just asking for patience until my schedule clears up a little — I’m a little past halfway done with the BASEMENT O’ DOOM! then, after that I actually plan to return to reviewing things again.  But that might not be until summertime? Trying hard to suck less!   -B

This week is a small week, but don’t be fooled! A small week can still have more big books than you can count. Including not one, but two, Mark Millar books in the form of STARLIGHT #1 and his and Quietly’s return to JUPITER’S LEGACY. Plus, new Warren Ellis in the form of MOON KNIGHT #1, Brubaker and Epting with VELVET #4 and the latest WALKING DEAD collection. That is a lot of things, but trust me, their is more beneath the cut!

This a big week following a month of smaller weeks, so if you had been holding back the previous weeks, now is the time to go all in on comic books! High profile releases this week are DEADLY CLASS #2, the return of THE WAKE and HAWKEYE #15, but if those aren’t the books for you than I am sure we can find you something beneath the cut!

Yay, the longest thing I write every year. Man, I didn’t AT ALL have the time to write this one, either. Go read it, then let me know what you think…… -B

Another week of comics appears! Though due to inclement weather conditions shipments for the whole of the west coast will be delayed twenty four hours but still shelved on Wednesday, so if you are an early morning comic buyer, maybe wait till the afternoon. Now the fun stuff! With the debut of the first collection of Ales Kot and friend’s ZERO, along side some of our other favorites, like ALEX + ADA, and new comer UNDERTOW, this is a week you should not shy away from. Find the rest of the comics you can look forward to this week after the cut!

It is another week of comics, I am sure you know you weren’t going to get off so easy as to not have new comics for a week! No! The big book this week is easily the third volume of PROPHET and a little thing called THE WALKING DEAD also comes out again this week. “Surely, there are more than two books this week,” you ask, and I respond, “of course!” Click that link below and you will see all the new comics for yourself!

February is starting slow with a week on the smaller side. Some standouts are the final collection of LOCKE & KEY and G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona’s MS. MARVEL.  Some other excellent choices lie just behind the cut, if you would like to explore deeper.

James Robinson signing @ Outpost 2/26, 5-7 PM

Brian Hibbs

The first signing for Comic Outpost is a super-doozy: Industry legend James Robinson (who, fun fact, had his first GN release with LONDON’S DARK the same year I opened my first store) will be appearing to support FANTASTIC FOUR #1 (on day of release), as well as ALL-NEW INVADERS and his Image comic THE SAVIORS.  I couldn’t be more excited. Comic Outpost is located at 2381 Ocean Ave in San Francisco.  There is buckets of free parking north of the store, and we literally have a stop of the K line streetcar right in front of the shop; we’re all of 8 stops on the underground from downtown, it is a short and easy hop. (And thank you Jeff Lester…  Read More…

Not the biggest week, about what one would expect from a fifth week, but the books hitting the streets are some the best that come out every month. There is some BLACK SCIENCE #3 , SAVIORS #2 and the always hotly anticipated SAGA, catch that before it goes into it’s regular hibernation. Those are books for all different  sci-fi tastes, but if you are looking something else it is likely represented just below the clicky click!

Hey, internet? Help me research?

Brian Hibbs

So I just got the 2013 BookScan data, but for me the biggest hole is ALWAYS “stuff that didn’t get categorized correctly” — supposed to be coded as “comics”, but, instead, it is listed as something else.  This happens the most frequently with “Memoir” books — I have to manually request things like Maus and Persepolis every year, because they’re not natively on the “Comics” list. Usually, I spend a few days combing through the previous year’s invoices, hoping to spot something obvious, but this year, with the second store, I barely have time to write the BookScan column at all, let alone being fussy about trying to find those 1-2 books that are worth reporting on, but got missed….  Read More…

A thought about “Free” Comic Book Day

Brian Hibbs

The first Saturday in May is coming soon, and with it Free Comic Book Day. I Love Free Comic Book Day. Adore it.  It’s the happiest day of the year, as far as I am concerned. But one thing it very much isn’t is “free” for the retailer. I count fifty-seven FCBD comics for 2014. If your retailer were to let you have one copy of each release, her cost would be $16.83. That doesn’t count the shipping, either. Figure about another $2.85 to get those comics into the store. The total, then? $19.68. It’s just something to bear in mind when you rush down to FCBD — Just three comics for you can be over a dollar (depending on…  Read More…

This feels like a normal week of comics but there are a few books that make it feel like more than any other week. ZERO #5 hits this week and we could not be more excited for that, plus Rick Remender and Wes Craig’s DEADLY CLASS #1 makes its debut and we are elated.  Those are our picks for the week, what are yours? Tilting at Windmills #229 is up!

This is how you know I am beyond overworked right now — I totally forgot to link to the new column on CBR. My opening thoughts on running two stores. (GOD, I AM SO TIRED AND OVERWORKED, it isn’t even funny!!!!) Read it, love it, comment here, if you like -B
