Savage Symposium: FEAR ITSELF & FLASHPOINT (Part 3 of 3)

Abhay Khosla

The fiery climax of our roundtable Q&A, in which questions about FLASHPOINT #2 are FINALLY ANSWERED, preconceptions are EXPLODED, homes are INVADED, true love is TESTED, and the hope of ALL will fall into the hands of ONE– and in a stunning twist ending, it turns out we were all in monogamous relationships with prostitutes this ENTIRE time.  Who saw that coming?  Well, in my case, everybody.  Everybody saw it coming.  Awwwww.

Part 2, in which Questions are asked about FLASHPOINT #1 & FEAR ITSELF #3, lessons are learned, truths are revealed, a bloody revenge is discharged and a bloody discharge has its revenge.

Savage Symposium: FEAR ITSELF & FLASHPOINT (Part 1 of 3)

Abhay Khosla

As part of the 10th anniversary of The Savage Critics on the internet, and in conjunction with the 4-part discussion of Chester Brown’s PAYING FOR IT, a more mainstream-oriented “round-table” discussion of Marvel Comics’s multi-title crossover headline series FEAR ITSELF and DC Comics’s multi-title crossover headline series FLASHPOINT was conducted between April 11, 2011 and June 19, 2011, covering slightly less than the first halves of both series. As each issue of FEAR ITSELF #’s 1-3 & FLASHPOINT #’s 1-2 was released, a single question was posed.

And here’s the big wrap-up to this week’s discussion of PAYING FOR IT! I hope you relished it as much as I.

Here’s Question #3.

Savage Symposium: PAYING FOR IT part 1 (of 4)

Brian Hibbs

As part of the 10th anniversary of The Savage Critic on the web, and since we had such a great time last year doing it with WILSON, we’ve decided to try and do several Savage Symposiums this year, leading with one “mainstream” and one “alternative” title. Abhay is leading the superhero one, which should see print in about two weeks, and I ended up leading this one, for Chester Brown’s PAYING FOR IT.   I asked the gang five questions, the first two of which are presented here for your reading pleasure. A question a day will follow through Friday.

SAVAGE SYMPOSIUM: WILSON by DAN CLOWES

Abhay Khosla

Dan Clowes is the cartoonist and author of a considerable number of the most celebrated comics of the past 20 years, including GHOST WORLD, DAVID BORING, ICE HAVEN and THE DEATH RAY, all of which originated in his EIGHTBALL anthology series.  His most recent publication is WILSON, his first original graphic novel published by DRAWN & QUARTERLY and released on April 28, 2010. WILSON prompted the following Savage Critic round-table discussion, which took place via the internet between May 2 and May 9, 2010.

Malthusian Superheroics: Chris reviews JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA

Chris Eckert

Fellow Savage David Uzumeri is at the Toronto Fan Expo and he’s liveblogging Marvel and DC’s panels. Friday’s DC panel featured a discussion of recap pages, with Len Wein positing that “we used to work under the theory, which I don’t think is true anymore, that every issue is somebody’s first issue” and Didio affirming his anti-recap-page position. Earlier this year Didio said he thought “the writers should be able to introduce readers to the ongoing story within the issue itself.” Let’s take a look at that then, shall we? Bill Willingham, Matthew Sturges and Jesus Merino started a run last month in JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #29. JSA is a book with a sprawling cast of legacy heroes a…  Read More…

Chris Reviews CRY FOR just kidding, Wednesday Comics

Chris Eckert

Wednesday Comics is here, and with it comes nostalgia! No, not for the time before we were born when the Sunday Funnies were enormous canvasses for the geniuses of the day to work their magic. Wednesday Comics instead transports us back to those heady years of 2006-7, when DC was putting out a weekly comic that inspired neither hair-pulling dismay nor polite boredom. Yes, the 52 nostalgia train is boarding! I have always been a sucker for oddly sized comics: even in the midst of trying to pare down my physical collection of comics, I am collecting more huge 1970s Treasury Editions and 1980s Blue Ribbon Digests. This predilection is likely the primary motive for my continued devotion to the…  Read More…

Chris Attempts to Write Capsules

Chris Eckert

Hey, long time no see. I’ve been remiss in picking up single issues of anything lately, and my trade review is being held up until I can rewatch Major League for research purposes, so I grabbed some Big Name Titles off the shelf and attempted to write capsules for them. They turned out more like horsepills. Amazing Spider-Man #592 by Mark Waid & Mike McKone The past two issues’ set-up for “24/7” was goofy in all the wrong ways: dumb science poorly applied to handwave a two month gap that in turn handwaves a bunch of supporting cast developments. Still, as headline-grabbing high concepts go, J. Jonah Jameson: Mayor of New York is a fun one. It’s also nice to…  Read More…

Late to the Welcoming Party: Chris Reviews some Final Issues

Chris Eckert

Hey everybody, why are you packing up the soundsystem? Why are they stacking the chairs? There’s still some helium left in these balloons, and it’s still a holiday weekend in Hawaii — c’mon guys, I just got here! Anyway, hello to all. I’m Chris, and alongside fellow newcomer David I work with the Funnybook Babylon gang. I don’t do a lot of straight reviews for FBB, so bear with me as I try to remember how those work. When I was a youth and had no Internet or collected editions to fall back on, I used to love getting last issues out of quarter bins. Last issues were always jam-packed with Things Happening, as creators scrambled to finish their stories,…  Read More…
