Wait, What? Ep. 75: Joshua Judges OMAC

Jeff Lester

[Above:  Not a deliberate shout-out, I'm sure, but we'll take what we can get, of course.] Thanks for your patience during our mild vacation! In return, we offer you Wait, What? Ep. 75, which features more than two and twenty minutes of Graeme McMillan and me “stealing the air” or “pump[ing] up the volume” or whatever it is you “kids” call it. [Thanks to Joolian for pointing out that should really read "two hours and twenty minutes," damn my eyes!] Do we talk Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and The Walking Dead? Do we, ever! Dare we discuss Gary Friedrich, Ghost Rider and Marvel? Dare, we do! Tire I of answering rhetorical questions? Frankly, yes, but I won’t let that get…  Read More…

Wait, What? There’s No Wait, What? This Week?

Jeff Lester

Yes, well.  Tiny vacations were taken last week (little itsy-bitsy ones!) and it was pretty darn pleasant, I gotta say. However, this means Graeme and I didn’t record last week, which means I didn’t edit yesterday, which means no podcast today.  (Why this means I have to somehow map out the entire production process for you, I’m not sure.  Obviously, the mini-cation didn’t help my ability to vamp awkwardly.) Which isn’t to say we don’t have some great Wait, What? related content for you anyway.  For example, check out this Portlandia video below for a very compelling cameo (right around the 1:03) mark: And! After the jump!  Kirby tattoos!

“It Relates To Justice!” Comics! Sometimes The King Did ‘em!

John Kane

Jack Kirby (28 August 1917 – 6th February 1994). The King of Comics. Actually, off-panel speaker, I was thinking more of Jack Kirby. Because on 6th February 1994 Jack Kirby died so on 6th February 2012 I read this comic and, later than anticipated because I got distracted, I posted these words about it and about Jack Kirby. Or as he is known ’round here “The King.”

Wait, What? Ep. 74: Who Before Watches the Before Watchmen?

Jeff Lester

I hope you have your calendar cleared until 2014, because that’s how long it’s going to take before Graeme and I get to answering all your questions from this thread. Honestly, how were we to know Before Watchmen was going to launched the day before we were scheduled to talk?  As the astute listener may note, we were pretty reluctant to launch into the topic and how clearly tried to get it out of our system beforehand…but like one of those county fair snacks gone bad, it keeps finding new and horrible ways to re-surge and expel itself. So join us, won’t you, for Wait, What? Ep. 74?  The first eighty minutes is Graeme and I talking Watchmen, Before Watchmen,…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 73: Thicker Than Forget

Jeff Lester

We didn’t even come close. Don’t get me wrong–we certainly tried.  But give Graeme and I more than four dozen questions with an amorphous time deadline and you’re not going to get the bulk of those questions answered even with us putting in two and a half hours to get it done.  [Though we do so at the expense of Haruki Murakami's 1Q84: if you are currently reading that book, please skip over the 20-25 minute section of the podcast to avoid some ship-sinking spoilers.  (Sorry again, Luke.)] So consider this Part 1 of our answers to your questions, with Part 2 to come next week.  If we go to Part 3, I give you permission to begin hunting us…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 68.2: Startkicker

Jeff Lester

It’s the conclusion of Episode 68 and our last episode for 2011! (Hopefully, it was be as carefree and as easy to find and listen to as part one was an epic tragedy.) Join Graeme McMillan and me on a speedy 75 minute tour of the highlights and lowlands of the year (of which the former is the career of Kate Beaton, whose book is represented above, and of which the latter is the career of, oh, I dunno, me, probably). The Kirby trial outcome! The layoffs at Marvel! Superhero movies! Kickstarter! Watchmen 2! Feigned excitement! And much, much more, of course. I pray to god the miserable son of a bitch is on iTunes but if not, you can…  Read More…

Have A Good One, Everyone!

John Kane

Season’s Greetings to one and all! Had a busy week what with all that festive malarkey and whatnot. Oh yeah, got you a “secret handshake” for Christmas, alright. Self indulgence beyond mortal comprehension follows after the break.

39 years later, and does anyone care?

What do C.C. Beck, Vaughn Bode, William S. Burroughs, Eisner, Fellini, Moebius, Kirby, Barry Smith, Tom Wolfe, and Frank Zappa have in common? THE SOMEDAY FUNNIES

“Assholes, Assemble!” Comics! Barbed Wire Laffs Inside!

John Kane

Before I start blabbing about a guy who hunts heroes but hasn’t found any yet here’s some advice I know wish I’d had when I was a teenager: Wise words there, kids. Some not so wise ones after the break…

Wait, What? Ep. 55.2: Press 1 for Yes, 2 for No

Jeff Lester

And we’re back with big finale of the podcast we recorded twice and edited twice (and, in a fine bit of “oh, ha-ha-ha, where’s my magical suicide gun?”, I had to write this entry twice because the first one got wiped out, ha-ha-ha, no really, where is it?). Included in this installment’s topics are The Trial of the Flash Showcase, Flashpoint #5, Thor: The Motion Picture, Flashpoint #5, the first volume of Bakuman, Fighting American and the Newsboy Legion, Flashpoint #5, Kid Eternity, the marketing of Schism, and the comic event that is not Fear Itself #5. This embarrassment of riches (or, alternately, embarrassment, depending on how you feel about these things) is available to you on iTunes and also…  Read More…

This Man, This Birthday!

John Kane

Jack Kirby was born on August 28th 1917. Happy Birthday, Jack Kirby.  Pour a soda pop, cut a slice of cake and put on a funny hat (a crown, perchance) as I talk about a Kirby comic after the break.

Wait, What? Ep. 51.1: You and Me and USM

Jeff Lester

My hope is the days of iTunes drama is behind us and Wait, What? Ep. 51.1 has already begun a safe and steady trek to your listening device of choice, but if not and it leaves you hanging (as it did some of us for the better part of the week with our last episode), please feel free to listen to it here. It’s got everything you could want in a comics podcast: Graeme McMillan! Miles Morales! Jack Kirby! Nick Spencer! Alan Moore! The library! (Oh, and also me and Marvel and Secret Avengers and legal wrangling as wrangled by two individuals utterly untrained in the art of said wrangling…): Wait, What? Ep. 51.1: You and Me and USM Pull…  Read More…

“…It’s not for free and it doesn’t come easy. It’s AMERICA!” Comics? I’m still reading ‘em!

John Kane

For pretty obvious reasons we don’t celebrate Independence Day over here but you guys sure seem to. Just to show you that there are no hard feelings I read some nationalistic comics and wrote some words about them for y’all. Be nice if you picked up the phone sometime, America. I know you moved out but we still worry about you.

Wait, What? Ep. 45: It Will Be Brought.

Jeff Lester

And so without further delay, Graeme and I are back with another podcast episode designed to amuse and bemuse.  (“Design” might be a little too strong a word, though.)  In this ep., we discuss our preparations (both mental and physical) for seeing Green Lantern: The Movie, as well as the Marvel event from 1989 Atlantis Attacks; Mark Gruenwald’s legacy on Captain America; Jack Kirby, Neil Gaiman, the Berganza/Didio interview tour, Avenging Spider-Man, the perfect setting for Tron 3, SDCC, and more.   You can find it on iTunes or listen to it here: Wait, What? Ep. 45: It Will Be Brought. Finally, we hope you enjoy Graeme’s dramatic interpretation of a beloved comic book character, which I’ve excerpted below in the…  Read More…

Burble Burble Burble, Hibbs fufills a promise to review

Brian Hibbs

I said I was going to review, so here’s a few quick hits. I’ve been spending a lot of time this week on the back end of the site, you’ll notice some of the real estate has changed. That “uncategorized” number will shrink over the year as I go through the older, blogger-era posts (sheesh, we have nearly 2000 posts here at this point!), but the tag cloud will really only be utilized properly going forward from here.   If you have any mechanical/aesthetic suggestions for the site, now is the time to do so.   Putting that aside, what stuck with me in the last two weeks?   PUNISHERMAX #14: I wrote up #13, but #14 compels me to…  Read More…
