Wait, What? Ep. 147: Where Walks…The Podcast!?

Jeff Lester

I was going to go with an Avengers image, like the Vision crying or something, but this page delights me every time I see it. Hello, friend!  Do you like comics? Do you like podcasts?  Do you ever find yourself wishing you could listen to men, grown men, grown middle-aged men, talking about comics and pop culture for more than three hours, with more than ninety minutes devoted to comic books that are more than fifty years old? This is where all my exposure to post-vaudeville media suggests I should write, “Then seek help!” in all caps, then spray you with seltzer water, shuffle off to buffalo, and go on to be horribly, horribly racist.  But we’re past all that…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 138: Gone Galoshing

Jeff Lester

Ahh, nostalgia. I used to love that cover….and I know I should crop out that border.  But. Hey, Internet! My apologies in advance–things are rushed, except maybe a little more so! My Monday schedule changed around a bit so it’s gonna be a rush on my part to make sure they still happen before Tuesday morning. All of which is to say: join me after the jump for some very hasty show notes, yes?

Wait, What? Ep. 137: Zombook Club!

Jeff Lester

This and Battling Boy are the subjects of today’s book club. Go pick up copies and argue along! Greetings from the Cosmic Habitrail! (That is how Flash now gets from one dimension to the next, right?) Due to an overabundance of running around and an underabundance of organizational skills, I have very, very brief show notes for Episode 137, our Book Club edition. but! I do also have a two hour long podcast for you, so… <nudge, nudge>. Eh? Eh? After the jump…both of those things!

Wait, What? Ep. 134: Putting the “Me! Me!” back into “Meme”

Jeff Lester

From the easy-to-love but difficult-to-defend (at least when you’re talking to Graeme McMillan) Yakitate!! Japan by Takashi Hashiguchi Hello, how are you? Is that a new shirt? Oh, really? Huh. Well, you look good in it anyway. Me? Oh, I’m mostly okay.  Ate something a few days that didn’t agree with me so my stomach is upset which kinda saps me of my ability to get things done?  I mostly want to just lie around and watch movies on Netflix where things explode and take my mind off my stomach… What’s that?  Does that mean I’m going to present you with a more truncated set of show notes to go with this episode?  Uh… let’s step behind the jump and…  Read More…

Hibbs? Why is HE stinkin’ up the joint?!?!

Brian Hibbs

Hi, it is me, the y’know, original founder of this blog.  You might have noticed I’ve been just a little slack in posting since around Christmas time. The Season soaked up my time, then I started my new consulting business, but mostly, I needed a break from writing reviews.  It happens! I was going to start posting a few weeks ago, but that was the week where Abhay descended out of the blue for a solid week of posts, and I didn’t want to step on his toes. This week, we welcome our newest SavCrit — the artist formerly known as J_Smitty (Yes, eventually every regular commenter will be given a seat in the big chair*), now unveiled as Jordan…  Read More…

Wait, What? Ep. 116: G-Mo K-Hole

Jeff Lester

Because it is Hook Jaw, and Because it is My Heart… Yep, we are back!  Sorry for our absence from the podcasting broadcast waves and of course the Savage Critic site itself. After the jump–show notes!  But before we get there, I wanted to congratulate House to Astonish for their 100th Episode!  I’m listening to it now, and want to recommend it for people who like what Graeme and I do but would maybe like it if it was done much better?  Congrats to Al & Paul! Now, then.  Where was I?  Oh, right.

Wait, What? Ep. 103: Churls on Film

Jeff Lester

They had me at “Kpow!”: Gil Kane Atom slugs Gil Kane Green Lantern, from Justice League of America #200. And so it’s that time again, O Mighty Whatnauts.  Join us behind the jump for show notes and kvetching, ‘kay?

Wait, What? Ep. 73: Thicker Than Forget

Jeff Lester

We didn’t even come close. Don’t get me wrong–we certainly tried.  But give Graeme and I more than four dozen questions with an amorphous time deadline and you’re not going to get the bulk of those questions answered even with us putting in two and a half hours to get it done.  [Though we do so at the expense of Haruki Murakami's 1Q84: if you are currently reading that book, please skip over the 20-25 minute section of the podcast to avoid some ship-sinking spoilers.  (Sorry again, Luke.)] So consider this Part 1 of our answers to your questions, with Part 2 to come next week.  If we go to Part 3, I give you permission to begin hunting us…  Read More…

Things That Actually Happened This Week: Graeme Really Manages To Review Some 6/22 Books

Graeme McMillan

Why, if it’s Monday, then it’s capsule reviews. And, for once, proper capsule reviews about books that came out on Wednesday! How did that happen? (Also, scroll down for John’s reviews, and then down some more for the shipping list. Yes, it’s a surprisingly busy Monday here, for once.)

(Almost) All DC, All The Time: Graeme On Some 5/18 Books

Graeme McMillan

Wow, Jeff’s really laid down the gauntlet with a second week of capsule reviews. Let’s see what I can come up with, even with the short amount of time I have…

Graeme’s 2010 Guilty Pleasure: Justice League of America

Graeme McMillan

Apropos of nothing, I re-read James Robinson’s run to date on JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA over the weekend – in part because I hadn’t read the latest issue by that point, and wanted to remind myself of what was happening before I did – and, as I did so, I realized two things. Firstly, it’s actually a book that I’ve come to really love, despite itself. And secondly, I can completely understand why that “despite itself” might be such a problem for everyone else.

Awesome!

Brian Hibbs

So, Ben showed me his first real signs of higher intelligence yesterday. We got him some blocks a month or so ago, and he did a lot of the “raking claw” and mostly just knocked them around the room. Which is cool, and all — he’s still a baby. But for the last week or so, everytime I’ve played with him I’ve tried patiently to show him how to stack the blocks. Didn’t really work, he mostly showed interest in knocking down the stack, flinging the blocks all over the room. This might have been because he was so excited he couldn’t control his fine movements, but I was starting to despair that he wasn’t figuring it out. Anyway, I’m…  Read More…

OK, I won’t be defeated

Brian Hibbs

Let me try to summarize what I spent two hours (total) writing twice, and see if the universe (NASTY BEAST!) lets this through IDENTITY CRISIS #3: Extremely powerfully skillfully done. This comes from affection, rather than cynicism, and it’s a great piece of craft. BUT, you can’t ask the audience to take Justice League of America #166-168 to its logical extreme AT THE SAME TIME as saying that they guy named “Deathstroke, the Terminator” doesn’t actually wax the JLA when he could do so effortlessly. Don’t bring the “real world” into the ACTUAL comics. These aren’t characters for today, these are characters for forever. Grant Morrison is right: the DCU is shiny hope-filled place or it should be, at least….  Read More…
