New TILTING up

Brian Hibbs

Good morning, internet! You know, I think Spurgeon just did a big disservice to Tucker by reducing 10k words (!) to “Tucker Stone: Various”! Foo! On the other hand, his defense of Alan Moore was the most right on commentary I’ve read this morning, so I guess it balances out… (Has anyone noticed that Spurge actually sorts his links by character count? Sure, it makes it look a lot more readable, but mein gott that’s some OCD-ish-ness right there!) Anyway, the newest TILTING AT WINDMILLS is up at CBR, go read it. I think I might have touched a nerve this time, because it already has 20 replies on CBR (that’s rare, even after a week), and most of them…  Read More…

Tilting v3 #22 is up! BookScan 2009

Brian Hibbs

Ah! It is the longest thing I write every year. WITNESS: 6 weeks of my life in the look at BookScan in 2009, in TILTING AT WINDMILLS #189 http://comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=24818 -B

Comic Book Movies in 2009?

Brian Hibbs

I’m pretty good about doing my own research, most of the time, but as I wander through my BookScan Analysis this year (Sheesh, I’m at 12,000 words, and I still haven’t touched 2 of the 4 categories!) I’m hoping I can depend on YOU to help me a bit. What movies based on comics were released in 2009? Watchmen, obviously. And Wolverine. Astro Boy. But then I start to blank. Name me some titles, would you? Thanks in advance!! -B

People were asking me to follow up on the “why retailer’s conservatism hurts” bit from a month or two back, so here we go. Go read the column on CBR! Also, in the follow-up category, Percy Carey has quit as Marketing Director of Tyrese Gibson’s Mayhem! in part due to the stuff I discussed in last months column. You can read Carey’s press release here. -B

Newest Tilting is up!

Brian Hibbs

Look: it is the new Tilting At Windmills, and here I talk about Neil Gaiman and Tyrese Gibson and Social Networking and Marketing, and how perfect storms are pretty imperfect after all. Some months are a long hard search for a subject, but this month was, in a way, a gift as it was 100% obvious what I HAD to write about. If you don’t/won’t/can’t comment at CBR, well you can say something here (but Jonah’d be more happy if you said something over there, yeah) -B

20 Years of Experience!

Brian Hibbs

First off, the new TILTING AT WINDMILLS is up at Comic Book Resources — it is all about the ComicsPRO meeting from last week, and also has a look inside Diamond’s new warehouse. But this week’s bigger news is that on Wednesday, April 1st, it is the 20th anniversary of Comix Experience. Whoa. Man, it sure don’t feel like 20 years. On 4/1, we’re going to hold a food drive for the San Francisco Food Bank. If you bring a can of food in as a donation, then you will get 20% off absolutely anything in the store. And, yes, Wednesday is New Comics Day; and, yes, that discount will apply to that week’s new comics as well, so, y’know,…  Read More…

The New TILTING is up!

Brian Hibbs

Personally, I think I did a really good job this month. You can judge for yourself, by going here. Dirk Deppey calls the beginning A “feelgood throat-clearing”, and I know why he does, but, honestly, a lot of that is the great feelings that Ben’s school instills in me for the Future and America. Like I JUST got back this morning from the school, and Jazz musician Marcus Shelby (who is one of the “Artists in Residence” there) just performed a concert for the kids. In between songs he talked about Obama’s presidency, and MLK and Rosa Parks, and all of the first graders and Kinders got up to sing “We Shall Overcome”, and I had a genuine lump in…  Read More…
