20 Years of Experience!

Brian Hibbs

First off, the new TILTING AT WINDMILLS is up at Comic Book Resources — it is all about the ComicsPRO meeting from last week, and also has a look inside Diamond’s new warehouse. But this week’s bigger news is that on Wednesday, April 1st, it is the 20th anniversary of Comix Experience. Whoa. Man, it sure don’t feel like 20 years. On 4/1, we’re going to hold a food drive for the San Francisco Food Bank. If you bring a can of food in as a donation, then you will get 20% off absolutely anything in the store. And, yes, Wednesday is New Comics Day; and, yes, that discount will apply to that week’s new comics as well, so, y’know,…  Read More…

The New TILTING is up!

Brian Hibbs

Personally, I think I did a really good job this month. You can judge for yourself, by going here. Dirk Deppey calls the beginning A “feelgood throat-clearing”, and I know why he does, but, honestly, a lot of that is the great feelings that Ben’s school instills in me for the Future and America. Like I JUST got back this morning from the school, and Jazz musician Marcus Shelby (who is one of the “Artists in Residence” there) just performed a concert for the kids. In between songs he talked about Obama’s presidency, and MLK and Rosa Parks, and all of the first graders and Kinders got up to sing “We Shall Overcome”, and I had a genuine lump in…  Read More…

The POS Follies: The Return, Part 11

Brian Hibbs

The new TILTING AT WINDMILLS is up right here. [If you hit the link below for the label "POS", you'll get the whole series, too] We’re very nearly a year later on installing the POS system, and several conclusions about it are in the new TILTING. We’ve been spending the last 2 (and probably next three) days going through each “Hasn’t sold in a year” title to set it’s Minimum Point (the place where it triggers a reorder) down to zero — it’s a pretty laborious task on 1400 items, but there you go. I’ve made a couple of suggestions on how to make it better to Mark & Ben & AJ at MOBY, and we’re trading mails back and…  Read More…

Tilting v3 #1!

Brian Hibbs

OK, so it’s actually #168, but it has a new home, over at Comic Book Resources, and I bet you that Jonah would like it if everyone would click through that link so he doesn’t start thinking, “Oh my god, what have I done” I also now have my own forum there (god, was that a foolish thing to ask for?), and I see the first message there says I’m a gay icon, and I should team up with Dazzler. I think I’ll answer that one when I’ve had a little sleep! -B

Responding to TITLING responses

Brian Hibbs

There’s been a couple of other opinion pieces going around this last week, using my latest TILTING AT WINDMILLS as a starting point. Most notably from Johanna, and from Christopher Butcher. This is good, I like debate. Here’s the thing though: I’m not sure if it is because I’m a lousy writer (guilty!), or if people are reading what they want to read rather than what I intended to say. I’ve been using Vertigo as my example because Vertigo has a (unstated but crystal clear) program where periodical series UNIFORMALLY get collected at about month #9 in what I think any reasonable person will conclude is the SUPERIOR value – it is cheaper, sometimes by nearly as much as half…  Read More…

New TILTING up

Brian Hibbs

I’ve been writing these things for 15 years, or something, so its really easy for me to get jaded. But I will modestly say that I think I did a really terrific job this month. Go Read Here -B

Excuses excuses.

Brian Hibbs

In lieu of a review today – Writing Onomatopea and another dental visit (I can eat again!) this week has kind of killed any chance for me to write about the various Spider-Man books today like I wanted to – I’m going to point out that Hibbs has a new Tilting At Windmills up at Newsarama today, about this very store: “I opened Comix Experience in 1989, when I was 21 years old, and I’ve seen the market change a whole lot in the meantime. I still have a copy of my first Diamond order form, all of 32 pages long in 14-point type, while now the order form (not Previews, but the order form) is usually over 130 pages…  Read More…

Brube in da house, and more of Hibbs’ blabbing

Brian Hibbs

It was a painfully slow day at the ol’ CE today — there were points I expected tumbleweeds to start rolling through. Thankfully, things were deeply enlivened when Evil Ed Brubaker did the surprise pop-in around 3 PM, which nicely helped us kill 3 hours, hooray! Ed, once a long time ago, lived in San Francisco, and was a CE customer. Back in the days before he became a Corporate Sell-Out, Working For The Man, Ed used to come around and be a Little Black Rain Cloud, always moaning about how much the comics business sucked, and how he got no respect, and yadda yadda. Don’t get me wrong, we loved it, because, yeah the comics business can and does…  Read More…

Still catching up

Brian Hibbs

I actually thought about changing the name of the blog to Graeme McMillan’s Savage Critic for the week, since he’s been carrying all of our asses this week… Anyway, about 60% of my ComicsPRO emails and calls have been made, I completed ONOMATOPOEIA this morning (gonna be amusing to photocopy it “while” we have a major signing going on), and the new TILTING AT WINDMILLS is up at Newsarama, wherein I talking about the ComicsPRO meeting. Reviewish stuff…soon. BUt probably not before Sunday, honestly. Also, one thing I didn’t get into my column (it didn’t seem to fit the tone), but I pasted it off into Notepad so I wouldn’t lose it: Let’s end this with the third weirdest thing…  Read More…

New TILTING up

Brian Hibbs

http://www.newsarama.com/Tilting2_0/Tilting38.html I have to admit I’m fairly dumbstruck how many people in the thread that follows are talking about how great SUPERMAN #75 was. I guess it really IS true that whatever you read first when you’re 13, is the greatest comic ever. Or something. -B
